Want a stronger relationship? ‘The most successful couples I know’ prioritize this habit every evening, therapist says 07/23/2025

Evenings matter!

While many focus on morning routines, what couples do before bed can be just as powerful in shaping a lasting bond.

In this CNBC article, I share two nightly rituals I’ve observed in thriving relationships which I recommend to everyone:

1) Oy and Joy” – a gentle daily check-in to name the burdens and the blessings

2) Intentional physical connection – from breathing back-to-back to a lingering kiss, small acts of touch can keep your bodies aligned and connected beyond you can imagine.

Together with fellow expert Amy Morin, we offer practical insights into how couples can nurture their connection, one evening at a time.

Read the full article here and comment below with your thoughts. I would love to know about other rituals that are out there.

Want a stronger relationship? ‘The most successful couples I know’ prioritize this habit every evening, therapist says Successful couples practice gratitude with each other, says psychotherapist Amy Morin.

Here’s what I often observe in couples therapy:Some partners begin using each other as emotional dumpsters by unloading their daily stress, frustrations, or unresolved issues without filter, care, or reciprocity.💡 A daily check-in is healthy. But when this becomes one-sided and prolonged, it begins to erode connection rather than nurture it.Here’s what can happen over time: • - One partner becomes emotionally exhausted or disengaged - Intimacy turns into emotional labor - Compassion gives way to resentment - The relationship starts to feel more like a dumping ground than a sanctuaryInstead, try this: ✔️ Process the intensity first with a therapist, coach, or trusted friend. ✔️ Journal your thoughts to gain clarity and emotional regulation. ✔️ Then share with your partner the part that invites closeness, or support. ✔️ Ask: Is now a good time to talk? Respecting each other’s bandwidth matters ✨The goal isn’t to suppress what you feel, but to bring your partner the version of your experience that builds partnership, not burden. After all, no one wants to be the “stinky dumpster”and you can’t criticize someone for reacting that way if they’ve been left to carry the load alone.
