Members of the Center's Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) and Community Advisory Board (CAB) met together yesterday to discuss our partnership with the Hellenic Olympic Committee to promote ΛΑ28! We are so grateful for the active participation of (l-r) Arion Chatzioannou (FAC), Joey Skarzenki (CAB), Eleni Hioureas (CAB) Lia Bozonelis (CAB), Arianna Papalexopoulos (CAB), Jennifer Poulakidas (FAC), Sharon Gerstel, (Center Director), Kathryn Morgan (Center Associate Director), Sotiris Masmanidis (FAC Chair), Eleni Tsaggouri (Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)/Ioannis P. and Eirini Caloyeras Lecturer in Modern Greek), and Lilian Evgenides Polydor (CAB). We were also joined by Michele Patzakis (CAB Chair). We look forward to announcing some exciting news about January 29 and 31, 2027, and our upcoming 8-part lecture series, "Crown and Glory," in collaboration with the Getty Villa.

The UCLA SNF Hellenic Center mourns the loss of Faye Demetriou. A teacher and beloved member of the community, Faye frequently attended our Center’s events and always had insightful comments to make about lectures and discussions. Always greeting us with a smile, she manifested a generosity of spirit and true kindness. While we lament her passing, we are grateful for her long and impactful presence among us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Faye's family at this difficult moment. May her memory be eternal.

A funeral service for Faye will be held on Monday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Sophia Cathedral followed by a Makaria luncheon and interment at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills.

Yesterday, the Olympic Flame for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games was lit and handed over at the Panathenaic Stadium. As the flame began its journey to the first Olympic event on the African continent, this landmark moment signaled new possibilities for young athletes around the world.

Χθες πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο η Τελετή Αφής και Παράδοσης της Ολυμπιακής Φλόγας για τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες Νέων «Ντακάρ 2026». Καθώς η Φλόγα ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι της προς την πρώτη Ολυμπιακή διοργάνωση που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην αφρικανική ήπειρο, η ιστορική αυτή στιγμή σηματοδότησε νέες δυνατότητες για τους νέους αθλητές σε όλο τον κόσμο.

We are looking forward to our upcoming book club discussion of "Diary of a Soldier in the Asia Minor Campaign," 1919–1921 by Pantelis C. Karatasakis, edited by Alec P. Karys and Gregory Kontos.
