Standing Up for Watts! Our youth leaders showed up for the community! We protested alongside students, organizations, and community members. The students of Jordan High School are returning back to a contamination zone. ☢️ One that has been caused by the Atlas Metal Company. They have reported high levels of lead (over 75x), arsenic, and shrapnel. The water that the students drink has been poisoned with lead, so much so that they advise the kids not to drink from that water. ⛲️ This is an injustice that keeps getting allowed because it is the City of Watts. We are protesting, we are fighting, we are standing up for all students and against this environmental injustice! ✊🏽

Together We Rise! Our Youth Leaders interviewed the community. Jordan High School student - Semmion Marshall speaks out 🗣 on the Atlas Metal Company. As a resident of Watts and student of Jordan High School he has experienced first hand the injustices being committed by Atlas. He speaks on the effects that the company has had to their health, the distractions to their education caused by them, and the lack of true change by local politicians. Semmion, his peers, and community are constantly exposed to lead, arsenic, harmful chemicals, loud noises, and community damage. The ground they walk on is no longer cement but oil due to the Metal Company. This is not promoting a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment for anyone. Without access to their school fields, with high exposures to fumes, he recognizes more needs to be done. The students, the community, the people are coming together to demand one thing, for the removal/relocation of the Atlas Metal Company. We know that is not enough, we need reparations for the long-term damages and crimes they have committed against the people of Watts. We need change, we need justice, We need reparations now! 💪🏽🔥

Join the fight! The fight for Watts for Our Community, for Our Children continues! 👊🏽✊🏽 Two of our student leaders & are representing the youth! Join us in this fight for Watts! For decades Atlas Metal company has been committing injustices against the community they “serve” in. High levels of lead, arsenic, magnesium, have seeped into the community and neighboring high school, Jordan High School. The students there have reported pieces of shrapnel impacting their softball fields, they can’t use their batting cage, and they’re unable to be fully invested in their education when they have to worry about their health and safety. Slowly but surely we are seeing the community rise. They are witnesses to the abandonment of a corrupt political system. Now we are seeing everyone come together, to save our community, to save our children, to save Watts. The people of Watts deserve a community center, an aquatics center, they deserve anything but the poison that is Atlas Metal Company. It’s Our Turn to dictate the future, one where there are reparations for the environmental injustices that these companies commit.

The Overturning of Roe v. Wade: A Continued Attack on Marginalized Communities 06/24/2022

"While every person should be entitled to an abortion... it is poor and other communities that frequently lack access to healthcare that will be most affected."

Student op-ed: https://bit.ly/3bqPU9T

The Overturning of Roe v. Wade: A Continued Attack on Marginalized Communities The debates regarding the federally protected right to an abortion should not center around religion or personal belief of morality. The issue of abortion is a healthcare issue and, with the reversal of Roe, systemic disparities in healthcare will only further stain the fabric of the nation. The lac...

Our Turn youth leaders were at the LAUSD board meeting today in advance of the Board's vote to approve next year's budget. Youth leaders lifted up the need for investments in mental health, tutoring, and college and career readiness, and made direct demands to the board and Superintendent to break down the barriers that stand in the way of students receiving the support they need.

Watch this space for more updates and to join us as LA youth organize for the investments we deserve.
