Remembering together is an essential part of collective healing. On the weekend before the 34th commemoration of Saigu, we went on a learning tour with the members of . We walked around Los Angeles and recollected the cyclical patterns of over policing and under protecting of black bodies. We named the impact of discriminatory banking practices and redlining that have often brought minoritized groups together in transactional relationships. We also shared communal stories of solidarity recognizing that we need to keep each other safe while working on systemic changes. We invite you to take a moment this week to pray for the peace of the city and work towards justice in our neighborhoods.

“How do we live as non-white settlers on stolen land?” We wrestled with this question with Samuel Lopez, a member of the Tongva-Gabrieleno tribe. He welcomed us with a song in front of the San Gabriel Mission, a place where thousands of indigenous ancestors were buried. Currently, 63% of San Gabriel residents are of Asian heritage and less than .2% are Native Americans. What is the reparation work before us? As one of the participants commented , “I’ve passed this place many times, but I didn’t know the history of the mission and how it has impacted the Tongva-Gabrieleno people.” It begins with learning the stories the land and those who stewarded for it for thousands of years and are still here. Get to know the Native Americans amongst us and support their priorities.

Happy Lunar New Year/설날, friends near and far. May you receive this year with renewed strength, movement, and passion. In the busyness and transitions ahead, remember to gather with others around the table. In chaos and in concern, may we remember Christ who is in our midst holding us together.
