Commitment Day for the Class of 2026! It seems like just yesterday they showed up as wide-eyed freshmen and now they're getting ready for new and exciting adventures. Congratulations to our seniors for committing to colleges and universities across the country - We wish you all the best!

Seniors enjoyed learning about wildlife conservation at the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar and Animal Tracks in Agua Dulce. Both of these organizations house animals that were confiscated from the illegal pet trade or were injured and unable to be rehabilitated to be released into the wild. Our students walked away with exciting and engaging encounters with these beautiful animals and learned about how they can support wildlife conservation efforts right here at home. With lunch at the park afterward, it was a great final Zoo Magnet Earth Day!

Thank you to the staff and volunteers at and for sharing your missions with our students. Many of our students inquired about volunteer and job opportunities and were excited about doing more to support wildlife conservation.

Thank you also to the teachers, chaperones, and admin who made these trips possible.

Happy Earth Day! 🌍 To celebrate and honor Earth Day, all of our Zoo Magnet students spent the day extending their learning beyond the classroom through community service projects, talks about environmental issues, and field trips with our community partners. Our 9th and 10th graders did invasive species removal at Fern Dell with Friends of Griffith Park and at North Atwater Park with Taking the Reins (respectively). 9th graders also went to the Autry Museum and the new Griffith Park visitor center to learn about local ecology Sophomores also did bird watching, water chemistry, nature journaling, and went to the Griffith Observatory for a planetarium show.

Thank you to all our teachers, chaperones, and community partners who made this special day possible and to our amazing students for their enthusiasm and hard work!

The Ballona Wetlands is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in Los Angeles county and used to span over 2,000 acres. Through the years, that has shrunk due to many developments such as the creation of roads and freeways and Marina del Rey. Now, only 600 acres remain.

In 1978, Friends of Ballona Wetlands was founded by Ruth Lansford and other concerned citizens to make sure that no more wetlands were lost and what was left could be restored. Today, they host education programs, volunteer restoration events, and awareness campaigns.

What are wetlands and why are they important? From US Fish and Wildlife Services: "California has about 454,000 acres of nonagricultural wetlands; more than 90 percent of the state's wetlands have been drained, mostly for agricultural purposes. Before significant agricultural conversion began, about 5 million acres of wetlands supported lush aquatic vegetation and provided habitat for hundreds of species of fish and wildlife as well as food, clothing, protection from predators, and transportation for native Americans."

The weather was absolutely perfect for tide pooling last Wednesday when Marine Biology students visited the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and explored the tide pools at Cabrillo Beach. What a perfect way to wrap up our unit on intertidal zones! Students found ochre stars, sea hares, blue banded hermit crabs, striped shore crabs, anemones, and even octopus and a nudibranch!

Another college trip in the books! Each year since 2016 our juniors visit three Northern California universities to learn about admission processes and see what it's like on different college campuses. This year our students had a great time touring and connecting with alumni at CSU Monterey Bay, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Davis. Thank you to all our alumni who met with our students to share their words of wisdom and a big thank you to our chaperones, Mr. Crowe, Mr. Gamboa, Ms. Valle, and Ms. Rivera for making this trip possible!

This week our Spanish III students got the inside scoop on meerkats from one of our very own alumni keepers at the zoo! 🐒📚 Seeing their curiosity come alive as they learned about meerkats in Spanish, their home language, made this experience extra special.
