Sometimes the biggest developmental changes happen in the smallest moments. ❤️

In our baby and toddler music classes, the same activity can look completely different as a child grows. At first, a baby may simply watch the parachute move, feel the air and fabric, and take in the music. Later, that same child is reaching, gripping, lifting, adjusting, and participating all on their own.

That’s early childhood development happening through music and movement: coordination, motor planning, sensory exploration, growing independence — and that wonderful toddler feeling of, “I can do this myself.”

At Ladybug Music, we love watching children grow into the activities they’ve experienced since babyhood. 🐞🎶

Babies learn rhythm by feeling it first. 🎶

Lap songs give little ones a chance to experience different rhythmic patterns through movement, while hearing the grown-ups around them sing along. It’s such a simple, joyful way to build early listening skills, musical awareness, and a feel for the beat.

And if you have a little one, we have a new Ladybug Music Baby Class starting Monday, September 14 at 12:45 PM at our Studio City studio. ❤️

Obwisana is a traditional circle-passing song from Ghana. 🇬🇭

At first, we give our Ladybug families a little help finding the moment to pass. But as the song continues, those cues aren’t needed—the steady beat starts to become something they can feel on their own.

Passing games like Obwisana are such a playful way for young children to practice listening, timing, coordination, steady beat, and making music together. Everyone has their own part to do, while also listening and responding to the whole group.

That’s a lot of musical learning happening in one simple circle. ❤️🐞

One of the beautiful things about music is that we don’t always have to be doing the same thing.

In this activity, one group sings the melody while the other keeps the steady beat with “ding dong.” Children are learning to perform one musical part while listening to another, an important skill that builds musical independence.

These kinds of playful musical experiences strengthen listening skills, attention, coordination, timing, and the ability to participate in a group while contributing something unique. They’re also part of the foundation for future skills like harmony, ensemble playing, and confident music-making.

At Ladybug Music, we love using traditional songs like Are You Sleeping (Frère Jacques) to introduce big musical ideas in ways that feel joyful, natural, and developmentally appropriate.

Ladybug Music is a music-first early childhood program, but some of our original songs naturally give children a chance to practice other skills along the way. 🥁

In “Missy-La Massa-La,” we begin by counting to five and then build our way to ten, giving children a playful way to hear, repeat, and remember their numbers through music.

While the counting is a fun added layer, the heart of the activity is still musical. The children are listening closely, playing their drums, exploring rhythm, coordinating their voices and hands, and participating together.

We love when learning happens naturally inside a joyful musical experience.

Big Pig is one of our all-time Ladybug Music favorites! 🐷 We also have a soft spot for our adorable Folkmanis Puppets pig puppet, who makes every visit extra fun.

But this activity is doing much more than entertaining.

Teacher Michelle establishes a steady beat with Big Pig and creates simple rhythm patterns for the grown-ups to echo. While it may look like the babies are “just watching,” they’re actually doing important work.

Research in early childhood development shows that babies learn through observation and imitation. They carefully watch facial expressions, movement, timing, and social interaction before they’re ready to participate themselves. Adult modeling helps build the foundation for rhythm, communication, attention, and musical understanding.

At Ladybug Music, parents aren’t just along for the ride. They’re an essential part of the learning process. Every song, rhythm game, and playful interaction gives children the opportunity to observe, absorb, and gradually join in at their own pace.

What looks like a simple game with Big Pig is actually laying the foundation for lifelong musical learning. 💛

This may look like simple lap tapping, but it’s actually one of the most important foundations of music.

Before children learn to play instruments or confidently perform more complex rhythms, they first learn to keep a steady beat. That steady beat helps develop listening skills, coordination, timing, focus, self-regulation, and musical confidence.

In our Big Kids classes, we practice feeling the beat in our bodies while singing rhythm patterns. It looks simple, but these playful moments are building lifelong musical skills one tap at a time.

At Ladybug Music, every song and activity is designed with a purpose. Through joyful, research-based music and movement, children develop a strong musical foundation while having fun with the people they love most.
