Our students in Zambia are learning Curwen hand signs, a hands-on way to follow the notes as they move higher and lower.

It’s one of the ways we make music something students can see, hear, and feel together!

We’re back from summer break in Los Angeles and we’re starting with the basics with two brand new classes!

At Delevan Drive Elementary students learn rhythm by clapping, chanting, stepping, moving and dancing together. By the time they add sticks, percussion instruments or scarves, they already know how the rhythm feels.

That foundation makes it possible for students to sing or chant together while playing different rhythms and adding movement at the same time. That’s ensemble work.

As teacher Laura says “rhythm is EVERYTHING.” #

Our Mumbai site shared an Indian singing exercise, introducing swaras: Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa-Dha-Ni-Sa.

Much like Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do in Western Music swaras giving singers a way to explore melody, pitch and the building blocks of a song.

After watching the video of Zambian kids singing, one student in Mumbai said “They were singing so perfectly, totally in tune, no mistakes at all, everyone together. How do they hit those Indian notes so spot on? It was absolutely amazing!”

One more incredible moment of connection created across borders. We are so proud of these kids!

Our India site is back from summer break and went straight to one of their favorite songs: Shosholoza’ a South African song that all our sites brought to life in a global music video in 2024.
The movements they are doing help call out the pulse of the song, turning this moment into a both a joyful class reunion and a lesson in feel and rhythm.

This is Futures in Tune in action.

Students in Los Angeles share the song they wrote and then across the world in South Africa, they get a chance to watch and learn it too.

Through this small exchange kids get connected across cultures, learn from one another and become a part of the Futures in Tune global community- all because of music!
