ADVANCED SAMPLERS PART 7: Shown here is my seventh and final sampler in the series, showcasing punching with strips of wool!

This sampler features strips of wool fabric that have been cut into 1/4-1/2" strips and punched just like you would punch wool yarn. The beautiful wool I used was purchased from in Rhode Island. The look of this perfectly mimics the look of traditional rug hooking, which uses a bent metal hook to pull strips of wool fabric up through the front of monkscloth! Rug Hooking is the traditional rugmaking tradition that punch needle rug hooking is based on, and is still practiced today. I ran out of wool and so I supplemented this piece with some rug yarn and a fluffy novelty yarn for the clouds, which I think gives a really nice effect!

Back in 2022 I completed an in-depth training with Amy Oxford to become an Advanced Oxford Punch Needle Instructor. Part of that process included completing 7 different 12"x12" sample squares of our own design, illustrating the various punch needle techniques that can be achieved with the 8 sizes of Oxford Punch Needles and the Craftsman Punch Needle.

This post is part 7 of this series!

In a world where we can order anything with a click, taking the time to make something with our own hands becomes even more meaningful. So I'm here to help you get creative this year! ❤️

You can find these punch needle pillow patterns and more on the Punch Needle World website.

This month's pattern is inspired by the upcoming Chinese New Year (Year of the Horse) beginning on Feb 17th. This Zodiac year is all about energy, freedom, big shifts and action, and I'm hopeful that it brings just that.

As you punch this pattern, I hope it carries some of that Horse energy with it: the courage to speak out against injustice, the confidence to explore new directions in your creative practice, and the momentum to take action on the ambitous projects you've been dreaming about.

ADVANCED SAMPLERS PART 6: Shown here is my sixth sampler in the series -- showcasing novelty yarns!

Isn't this a fun one?! This sampler showcases 25 different craft store and novelty yarns and what they look like when punched. Novelty yarns can be tricky to work with. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't! Sometimes the fiber content or texture of the yarn is too slippery for the needle, or too lumpy or frayed (getting caught in the tip of the needle). Sometimes even when it works, the resulting loops don't always look that good. This was a fun batch! My favorites are the variegated yarns and the "fuzzy" looking yarns (the beige and turquoise with white seen in the upper left) even though they were super tricky to work with! Which ones stand out to you?

Kick off your new year with a new project! Rug yarn is still 20% off to get you on the right track for 2026 💪

9 colors are already out of stock, but the gorgeous hues shown here are some of my favorites -- and there's plenty left!

⚠️ As a reminder, I'm discontinuing my product line of punch needle frames and rug yarn and selling through all my inventory so once these colors are gone, they're gone! ⚠️

Get 'em while you can! High quality + affordable rug yarn is hard to find....

This month's pattern is "Let the Light In" -- a simple candle glowing against the darkness.

This winter/holiday season carries a universal longing for light. Across traditions and throughout time, we've gathered around flames during the darkest days -- whether it's luminarias lining walkways, candles on a menorah or the soft glow of a fire bringing family together around the Christmas tree.

As you punch this piece, I hope it also reminds you that you carry a beautiful light within you, and even the smallest gesture -- a kind word, a moment of presence, the simple act of creating something with your hands -- brightens the world!

Aren't handmade gifts wonderful? I think they embody the true spirit of the holiday season.

These punch needle napkin rings I made using Osprey yarn are a simple project that can be completed in a day, and a set of these would make a spectacular present for someone who loves hosting and gathering people around the table.

The full instructions for this project are available for free on the Punch Needle World Blog!

ADVANCED SAMPLERS PART 5: Shown here is my fifth sampler in the series -- working with multiple strands of yarn!

Did you know that you can thread multiple strands of yarn through your punch needle to create fun color variations and textures in your piece? This is a great way to make thinner yarn work in your Regular needle, and it's also a handy trick for working with lumpy or fuzzy novelty yarn like the yellow/pink one you see here, which wouldn't normally work in the punch needle. One of these hearts even used 3 different yarns in one!
