A modern guide to the ancient practice of yoga. Honoring the traditions while breaking new ground toward healing and unifying the human community.

I was born to teach yoga. When I was 8 years old a doctor diagnosed me with Scoliosis and gave me a regimen of exercises to help correct the curvature in my spine. I did the exercises for years, all through my teens and twenties, never having any idea that I was practicing yoga poses. Then when I was 34 I stepped into a yoga class for the first time and it all came together. I felt an undeniable c

Bodies are wild. So many ways to move. Possibilities to explore. Aches, joys, pains & wonders to be felt. How could we ever be bored inside these miraculous meat suits of infinite expression?

For any anatomy nerds out there, you might notice my left shoulder blade sticking out. This is due to a chronic injury to my left long thoracic nerve that has resulted essentially in the complete atrophy of my left serratus anterior, and that pretty much slammed the brakes on my asana practice about three years ago. I’ve since had multiple MRI’s, X-rays & EMG’s, been to two neurosurgeons, two spinal surgeons, a nerve specialist, two chiropractors, three physical therapists & a doctor of Chinese medicine. So far no one’s been able to figure out what’s causing the issue or how to resolve it. Most of them have told me there’s nothing I can do and that I just need to live with it. I’m prepared to accept that that may be true, but as long as there are possibilities left to explore, it’s my nature to explore them.

And so we venture on, me and this bizarre & blessed body. With curiosity, determination & as much as possible unflagging enthusiasm for the fact that we get to be here at all. This is my practice. My cross to bear and my gift to unwrap and learn to share whatever it has to teach me. This is my yoga these days, and I am grateful to be on this journey and to be able to share it with you. Hopefully you’ll find some value in it or be inspired by it or both in a way that helps you on your own journey. Meanwhile, if anyone knows of a healer of any kind who has successfully healed a chronic long thoracic nerve injury, I’d love to talk to them!

Stay curious, my friends. Stay positive and never stop exploring the possibilities. You never know what you might discover or who it might help.

Thx to my friend Steven Puri for this photo. I’d tag him but he only finds out about important things on IG from his dynamo of a wife, so I’ll tag her instead… thanks Steven & for making so many joyful memories with me in Morocco! Love you both 🙏🏼✨🇲🇦🥳🤍

We all rise. Every day. Some higher than others, but one way or another we all rise, even if it’s just to get out of bed 🚀

We all practice too. Whether we mean to or not. Whether we even realize it or not. Everything we say & do contributes to the shape we’re in. Physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, relationally, spiritually. Whether we’re remodeling, rebuilding or reinforcing depends largely on the level of consciousness we bring to each moment. But one way or another we are constantly conditioning ourselves, usually from the inside out 🌬️

As for shining? Some seem to do it naturally while others seem to struggle. But there’s no one who shines who hasn’t struggled, and no one who’s struggling who isn’t capable of shining. It might take a little time. Maybe a lot of time. And it will almost definitely require patience, faith, determination, good decisions and probably at some point asking for and receiving help. The good news is those are all things you can practice. If you want 🤔

So what about you? Are you rising and shining as high and as bright as you know you can? If so, amazing. How can you help others to do the same? And if not, what are you practicing? Or more importantly, what are you NOT practicing that might help you get where you want to be?

We all have dreams. Perhaps the reason is to encourage us to find the practice that will help us realize our potential. If you haven’t found yours yet, I hope you will soon. But either way, I hope you’ll never give up. And I hope you’ll stay open to change when it’s time. It’s never too late after all to rise a little higher or shine a little brighter. And you never know who you might help or inspire just by giving it one more try 💫

Thanks for the great pic 🙏🏼 What a trip!

🌟NEW CLASS SERIES — “WILD YOGA” 🌟

I was taught to understand yoga as a technology to help us live our best lives—physically, mentally, emotionally & relationally. Ultimately the way the technology works is by helping us calm our minds and balance our nervous systems so that we can see ourselves & reality more clearly & deal with it all more effectively ☯️✨👀

Inherent in realizing our potential tho is the necessity of testing our edges. In this way yoga offers a bit of a reverse uno card. “If you want to be calm,” it says. “It might help to feel even more stress first.” 🤔

By inviting us to explore uncomfortable situations while maintaining focus on & control of our breath, yoga seeks to create a container of exploration in which the nervous system is consciously (& ideally very mindfully) stressed in order to strengthen it, the same way lifting weights stresses muscles in order to make them stronger ✨💪🏼✨

In a perfect world, our practice enhances our ability and to be at ease in a wide variety of situations. This implies helping us to become more open, more curious, more tolerant, accepting & compassionate, and ultimately more intelligent & capable… & it is in this spirit that I’m very proud and excited to introduce “Wild Yoga”, a series of 5 classes meant to help you dive a little deeper into your potential. Who knows… maybe a lot deeper 🚀✨🧠🤸🏽‍♂️

If you’re ready to get a little wild with your practice, I hope you’ll check it out on & let me know what you think. It was made with a lot of love and deep belief in your capacity to shine ever brighter ✨

Friend told me the other day that her son-in-law started a new line of men’s yoga shorts/bathing suits & would I be willing to try them out. “Of course…”

Couple days later a package arrived with a sweet looking pair of black shorts with the nicest liner I’ve ever felt. “Mmmm…”

Long story short, I put ‘em on and have basically been wearing them ever since. Thank you for my new faves. Looking forward to seeing you soar 🙏🏼✨🦅

13 years ago today I stepped into a yoga class for the first time. Been a pretty amazing ride ever since. To all the people who have supported, inspired & guided me on my way… all the teachers, students, family, friends and everyone else who’s been a part of it… even those who have stood in my way… thank you thank you & thank you again. You’ve given me so much. More than you or I will probably ever know 🙏🏼✨🤍

If you’ve ever practiced Ashtanga yoga, you know how helpful it can be in terms of building strength, flexibility, focus and overall body awareness. You probably also know how challenging it can be. Sometimes too challenging 😟😳😩

My intention with this group is to offer practices that are based on the Ashtanga sequence without being so rigid and demanding. The goal is to help you improve without holding you to an unrealistic expectation, and to show you a wide variety of ways that the practice can be adapted and modified to meet your own individual needs 😊🤩🥳

In just two months our group has grown to include almost 50 members from all over the world, and there’s room for plenty more. For those who can’t make the live sessions, I send out the recording of each week’s practice so that you can follow along. And in a effort to make these practices available to as many people as possible, all classes and recordings are offered by donation ✨
For more info or to join a class and/or receive a recording of a previous practice, please feel free to drop your email in my DM’s 📥🙏🏼

And don’t worry. You don’t need to be able to put your leg behind your head. Or even want to. You just need to have an open mind, a willing body and a desire to learn (and also a wifi connection 📡✨)

So much has changed in the last three years, and part of what’s changed is how yoga is taught and practiced.

There’s so much that could be said on the subject. Easily enough to fill a book—the closing of so many local studios; the migration of many teachers to other career paths; the fitness-ification of the practice by various apps and corporate chains; the feelings of loss and discouragement among so many people who now think of yoga as something they only used to do…

One thing that’s become more clear than ever through all these changes is the value in knowing how to practice on your own… which is why I started this practice group. 12 years ago I learned the Ashtanga primary series. It became the foundation of my exploration, and it continues to be something I come back to over and over because it never stops feeding me, teaching me, reminding me of my roots.

The purpose of these sessions is to familiarize you with the traditional Ashtanga sequence, and then show you a variety of ways it can be modified and adapted to meet your own personal needs. It really is an amazing practice with endless possibilities to explore. If you’re curious to learn about how it can help you either to get back on track with your practice or begin to build one for the first time, I hope you’ll join us. It’s a pleasure and honor to share what I’ve learned. For more info, drop a DM. And if you’re already in the group, please feel free to spread the word… the people need their yoga!🙏🏼
