There's so much going on in some of these old tombs...

Established during the 1880s silver rush, the cemetery served the rough-and-tumble mining community of Calico, which peaked with over 500 mines and thousands of residents.

Some records suggest the earliest burial may have been a 13-year-old boy named Bobby Stephens who died in 1869ā€”predating the official silver boom.

Many graves reflect the hardships of frontier life, including mining accidents (cave-ins and explosions) and illnesses like typhoid fever and diphtheria.

Donald Willard "Tumbleweed Harris," a 1950s Knott's Berry Farm street character and Calico devotee, is also buried here. His grave started the tradition of modern burials with "street character" personas.

Walter Knott restored the ghost town in the 1950s, and the cemetery remains a preserved landmark that occasionally receives modern burials for community descendants.
