As people tackle the inevitability claims of AI and the permanent instability its “creators” are aggressively pushing, we must decide to exponentially improve the basic skills a person needs to succeed… someone prepared will see this instability as an opportunity, someone without those skills or resources will experience it as a displacement. As educators, the choice is clear; we must teach and develop students to have agency under uncertainty.

Creating a space for students to do what they can is key the work. Facilitation and guidance are key to their learning. Agency is supported by clearly helping students understand how even a small action will grow their understanding and confidence.

Preparing any student of any age to learn is a key element to their success. How can it be done? The answer is simple, but very complex because it requires us to get to know the students as a group and individuals. Yes, when this happens, it’s a magical experience!

Literacy is the most authentic act of inclusion. Writing empowers students to create counter-stories that make their experiences visible. Reading invites others to understand those stories with empathy and curiosity. Filmmaking then transforms literacy into collective action, where stories are not only written and read, but also seen, heard, discussed, and remembered.

Here we showcase the two most important tools to launch a new project or program… a workbook and a pencil. We are looking forward to this next school year, our 10th year getting to collaborate with amazing students and caring educators!
