Meet Sam Qunell, Mathika’s Math Director!

With a Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCLA and a broad STEM background, Sam brings years of experience teaching and mentoring students — from the university classroom and UCLA Math Circle to his early days as a peer tutor.

But what stands out most about Sam is his genuine curiosity. He loves anything that challenges the mind, whether that means exploring a thought experiment, solving a complex riddle, or figuring out the strategy behind a new game.

Why I Started Mathika

"I started Mathika with a simple conviction: in a fast-changing world, students need sharp problem-solving habits, intellectual confidence, and exposure to the real uses of mathematics."

That conviction comes not only from a passion for mathematics and education, but also from experience in the business world. I've seen firsthand the skills that matter when students eventually enter real-world environments: thinking critically, solving unfamiliar problems, communicating clearly, and applying knowledge to complex situations.

Westwood Showed Up for Math!

If you weren't able to make it to this month's Westwood open house, here's what you missed: a room full of kids learning over real math puzzles, comparing strategies with the student next to them, and getting genuinely stuck — in a good way — on problems that made them think harder than usual. Parents spent the afternoon talking with our team and some of the instructors, asking the questions that matter most to them: class size, pacing, and how we work with a kid who's already ahead of grade level.

That's really the point of an open house — no brochure can show you what a Mathika classroom feels like the way walking into one can.
