August Remittances Up 18% To USD 680.8Mn, Further Strengthening Consumer Spend

Sri Lankans working abroad sent back home USD 680.8Mn in August 2025, logging a solid 17.9% YoY increase, yet again reinforcing the strength of remittances as the country’s largest source of foreign currency inflow.

Among other things, the steady growth appears to be mainly driven by the record number of Sri Lankans who sought overseas employment in recent years, many of whom have now started to repatriate part of their hard earned earnings back home for their friends and families. With August inflows, cumulative remittances for the first 8-months of CY25 have reached USD 5,116.0Mn reflecting a robust 19.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
