I was homeschooled Kā€“12.

Then I became a credentialed public school teacher.

And now I homeschool my own kids.

So when I say I chose homeschooling with my eyes WIDE open, I mean it.

Iā€™ve experienced education from both sides.

Homeschooling isnā€™t about believing I can recreate school at my kitchen table.

Itā€™s about realizing I donā€™t have to.

My kids can learn at their pace. We can spend more time on what they need and move on when they understand it. We can protect family time, follow curiosity, get outside, and build an education around the actual child.

Choosing a different path isnā€™t radical just because it isnā€™t the most common one.

Sometimes questioning what everyone else accepts is exactly where change begins.

I was homeschooled all the way through high school.

And growing up, my public-schooled friends definitely thought some things about my life wereā€¦ weird. šŸ˜‚

But hereā€™s whatā€™s wild:

The things that made me ā€œdifferentā€ were the same things that prepared me for adulthood.

I learned how to think for myself.
How to learn without someone constantly telling me what to do.
How to manage my time.
How to talk to people of all ages.
How to build a life outside of a classroom.

I didnā€™t need my education to look like everyone elseā€™s to be successful.

And neither do your kids.

Homeschooling isnā€™t about keeping up with a system.

Itā€™s about building an education around the child in front of you.

We keep asking kids to focus better while giving them less of the things their bodies were designed to do.

Move. Play. Get outside. See daylight. Run. Climb. Breathe fresh air.

As a former public school teacher, I watched kids struggle to sit still and focus, and the answer was often another strategy for managing the child.

But sometimes the environment needs changing too.

Kids arenā€™t machines. Movement and outdoor time arenā€™t rewards we squeeze in after learning. Theyā€™re part of supporting kids so theyā€™re ready to learn.

This is one of the biggest reasons I protect outdoor time in our homeschool.

If parents could see and hear what teachers see and hear every single day, the conversation around education would change FAST.

Not because teachers arenā€™t trying.

Because teachers are often trying to teach while managing behaviors, interruptions, conflict, paperwork, testing, and needs that one person was never meant to handle alone.

I taught inside the system. Now I homeschool my own kids.

Seeing both sides completely changed the way I think about education.

And I think parents deserve to know what classrooms actually look like, not just what theyā€™re supposed to look like.

Bring back consequences.

There was a time when getting sent to the principalā€™s office meant, ā€œOhhhh I messed up.ā€

Now teachers can document, redirect, call home, write referrals, and send students out... only to see them walk back into class 10 minutes later.

Then we wonder why behavior is out of control.

Consequences arenā€™t cruel. They teach kids that choices have outcomes.

And that lesson matters far beyond the classroom.

This is the kind of education I wish we talked about more.

Kurt Vonnegut didnā€™t tell these students to create art so they could monetize it, build a following, get an A, or become the best.

He told them to create because of who they would become in the process.

And I think our kids desperately need more of that.

Weā€™ve become so focused on outcomes that childhood can start to feel like one long rĆ©sumĆ©-building exercise.

What grade did you get?
Did you win?
Are you good at it?
Can this become a career?

But some things are worth doing simply because they make you more human.

Paint badly. Write the poem nobody reads. Sing loudly. Build something. Grow something. Make something just because you wanted to.

Not every part of education needs a grade, a test, a certificate, or a future paycheck attached to it.

Sometimes the lesson is who you become while doing it.

And THAT is an education worth giving our kids.
