Nearly half of California teachers say they plan to retire or leave the profession within the next 10 years, according to a new national survey of educators. While teacher morale in California is slightly higher than the national average, many educators still say they expect to step away from teaching in the coming decade.

Across the country, teacher morale has been declining, with educators citing issues like financial pressures, large class sizes, and worsening student behavior as major challenges in the classroom. Some teachers say improvements such as more planning time, smaller classes, and stronger support for managing behavior could help keep them in the profession.

With schools already facing staffing shortages, experts warn that a large wave of teacher departures could make it harder for districts to recruit and retain educators, potentially impacting students and classrooms across the state.

California is suing the Trump administration over a new federal policy that requires colleges to submit detailed admissions data — including race, gender, GPA, and standardized test scores — for applicants, admitted students, and enrolled students going back several years. The federal government says the rule is meant to ensure universities are complying with the 2023 Supreme Court decision that banned affirmative action in college admissions.

California and other states argue the demand is excessive, rushed, and could expose sensitive student data while placing major administrative burdens on universities. They say the policy amounts to a “fishing expedition” that could lead to investigations or penalties for schools.

The lawsuit will now move through federal court, and a judge has already temporarily paused the requirement, giving the courts time to determine whether the federal government has the authority to require this data from colleges.

Major developments are unfolding in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest public school district in the United States.

Earlier this year, federal authorities executed search warrants connected to a technology contract involving the district’s AI chatbot project called “Ed.” The tool was intended to help students and families access tutoring, academic support, and district resources through artificial intelligence. The project was developed with the ed-tech company AllHere but ultimately collapsed after the company faced financial problems, raising concerns about oversight and the district’s contracting process.

Following the searches, Alberto Carvalho publicly addressed the situation for the first time. Carvalho stated that he did nothing wrong and expressed hope that he will be able to return to his position as superintendent.

The investigation is now focused on how the multimillion-dollar AI contract was approved, managed, and monitored, and whether proper procedures were followed during the procurement process.
Why this matters:

LAUSD serves hundreds of thousands of students across Los Angeles, and the outcome of this investigation could influence how school districts nationwide adopt and regulate AI tools in education, particularly when public funds and student data are involved.
For now, Carvalho remains on administrative leave while federal investigators continue reviewing the contracts and communications tied to the project. The LAUSD school board will ultimately determine whether he returns to lead the district or if new leadership is needed.
