I’ve spent the last several weeks doing deep dives into actors’ materials — headshots, rĂ©sumĂ©s, reels, clips, casting profiles, all of it.

And I keep seeing the same two things over and over.

One: actors often can’t see the through line in their own careers.

And two: there is one tiny word that keeps giving away the thing they actually want to be doing.

The word is “also.”

As in: “I play mothers, doctors, therapists, executives
but I’d also like to play women who are funny, sharp, difficult, vulnerable, emotionally complicated.”

Paul Schmidt of VOPro asked me a question no one had ever asked me before: what did coaching acting teach me that being taught never could? đŸȘž

Here's what I discovered: the subconscious doesn't know the difference between you and anyone else. Everyone we meet is a mirror.

Which means when I coach an actor, there is no separation. I can't half-show-up for you any more than I could half-show-up for myself. I never hand my actors medicine I haven't taken — every tool, every reframe, every pep talk has been road-tested on my own artist's heart first.

And the mirror gives me one more gift to give: I can see my actors' paths with a clarity they can't always access for themselves yet. Holding that vision for someone until they're ready to hold it on their own? That's the most sacred part of this job. Real coaching was never a one-way street — it's two artists standing in the mirror. ❀

"You can't do that. Don't waste your time."

Someone said that to me — about actors creating their own TV shows. I believed them. Then came Atlanta. Pamela Adlon's Better Things. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend — literally a year later. 🎬

When Paul Schmidt of VOPro asked me about the biggest limiting belief actors tell themselves, this is where I went: we convince ourselves the game is rigged — nepotism, ageism, gatekeeping — and that there's no place for us. Those obstacles are real. And people who "aren't supposed to make it" make it anyway, over and over and over again.

Anyone telling you you can't do something — especially if that someone is you — is wrong.

I love interviews where the conversation goes deeper than a list of credits.

One of the things I appreciated most about talking with Paul Schmidt on the VO Pro Podcast is that he wanted to know why I became an actor.

The answer came instantly.

I was six years old when my grandmother took me to see Annie at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre.

That afternoon changed the trajectory of my life.

The journey since then has included NYU, acting, writing, directing, filmmaking, coaching, and plenty of unexpected detours. But the thread has always been the same: a love of storytelling.

I’m grateful to Paul for asking questions that gave me the chance to reflect on where it all began.
