Oftentimes, constraints on our growth are self-imposed and malleable. In order to achieve mastery of an academic curriculum, one must first achieve mindfulness. The things we tell ourselves matter, and our primary goal is to cultivate confidence and a growth mindset in our students. Individuality. This is the eye of our whole-student approach. Our nature, upbringing, interests, and even our mood can affect the cognitive processes that dictate our day-to-day learning behaviors. Rational, calculated analysis of mathematical formulas simply may not work for the artistically gifted child; and whimsical, open-ended teaching methods may not work for the logically gifted child. Zen: a state of calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort. In lieu of emphasizing dogma or doctrine, zen philosophy aims to cultivate compassion, wisdom, and a perception of reality unobstructed by personal biases. Also, rather than mind-body dualism, zen underscores the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Its flexible, accommodating teachings led zen to be embraced throughout Asia as early as the 5th century and by the West in the 20th century.

While our approach to each individual child may differ, our mission to foster wisdom, mindfulness, and an unobstructed presence of mind in each of our students remains unchanged🍃📚

In his 1983 book titled Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Howard Gardner proposed 8 abilities that manifest multiple intelligences, namely:
•Musical-rhythmic and harmonic
•Visual-spatial
•Linguistic-verbal
•Logical-mathematical
•Bodily-kinesthetic
•Interpersonal
•Intrapersonal
•Naturalistic

This perspective broke away from the traditional view that intelligence was a linear spectrum measured by, say, an intelligence quotient (IQ) or academic achievement. Gardner even went on to suggest other intelligences, including existential and teaching-pedagogical intellect!

Here at Zen Academics, we believe that intelligence can manifest in a variety of ways. As tutors, it is our job to use a child's strengths to their advantage in other areas. For example, a child that demonstrates high bodily-kinesthetic intelligence may benefit from a sports analogy in a math problem. A child displaying high interpersonal intelligence may benefit from teaching the material back to the tutor. A child with high musical-rhythmic intelligence may benefit from making a mnemonic song to organize information.
