The Honorable Elijah Muhammad recognized the inherent weakness in the public school system and determined that for Black people to gain the tools needed to build a new reality for themselves we needed to establish an independent school system, with a new and better foundation.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad established a vehicle that would enable us to control the education of our children and consequently the direction of our future. For many years, the teaching staff of Muhammad University's of Islam was compromised of individuals who did not have a college degrees. However, as believers in Elijah Muhammads vision, they had a sincere interest and determination to educate our children. Gradually, the school began to attract college graduates and experienced teachers until the entire faculty was degree bearing.
