Nonfiction Picture Book for Multiple Grades
Dear Librarian by Lydia M.Sigwarth and Romina Galotta 2021
When a young girl’s family is homeless, the parents take the children regularly to the local library where the librarian makes the children feel safe and cozy with magical titles.
This is Lydia Sigwarth’s true story about the challenges her family faced and the librarian who brought sunlight into their lives with the joy of reading.
This is also a great title for upper grade students as part of a writing unit of study. Listen to this short video for suggestions.

What are you teaching kids today that counts?
Early in my teaching career I followed the curriculum guidelines chapter and verse but I was missing something.
That missing item was teaching kids what really counts.
So as you go through your lessons, does it really count that kids read x number of pages or is it more important that they read less pages but fall in love with reading?
Teach them what really counts and share your thoughts with colleagues.
Books by Horseback: A Librarian’s Brave Journey to Deliver Books to Children
by Emma Carlson Berne
2021
It’s time to celebrate librarians, especially those who adventured through the rough terrain of Appalachia to bring books to children and help them fall in love with reading.
This is also a great mentor text for teaching word choice.
Winner of the 2021 Northern Lights Book wards for Historical Fiction.

The First Blade of Sweet Grass by Suzanne Greenlaw, Gabriel Frey, Nancy Baker 2021
Here’s a sweet and authentic picture book to be used as a read aloud or as part of a unit of study on Native Americans. Students will enjoy the basket making ideas. Beautiful colors throughout and a Wabanaki glossary at the end.

This title is perfect as a read aloud for younger students including preschool. Love the message of worry less about things that don’t really matter.
This title is so rich for WW and RW lessons:
✅ the exaggeration of spelling …a baaaaaaad mood
✅ elements of literature
(Easy to teach elements of plot)
✅ ellipsis
✅ interjections
✅ word choice
✅ theme
And more!
Kids of all ages love this series and this latest title will have students requesting this title over and over!

Seeking an Aurora
by Elizabeth Pulford and Anne Bannock
Not brand new but is recently published. A great picture book to add to a science unit. A great mentor text to add to a narrative writing unit, too.
A young boy wakes to a cold midnight adventure with his dad. They walk up a hill to see the Aurora Australis and this distant man becomes an excited and loving father as he explains this phenomenon.
