Dean Joan M. Schaefer

Dear Friend of Dean Joan:

As you may know, Dean Joan kept a file on each of us – some 1,000 student files that she maintained over the years. Some include those “involvement” forms she had us fill out for letters of recommendations, copies of the letters of recommendations, correspondence and holiday cards from over the years, and much more.

The University had retained these files initially, but once we discussed their content, we agreed that I would reach out to the former students and offer them their file. If they declined, we would shred it. We’re now in the process of contacting the former students. If you would like to check to see if we you’re your file and would like to receive it, please contact me at the email address below and we will check, and if it exists we will arrange for USC to mail it to you. If you do not want it, we will shred it.

Please know that these files have been under “lock and key” for all these years and no one has gone through them. Dean Joan did not maintain a file on everyone, and while some files are thick, some are quite thin. Many of those who have received theirs already have commented om how much this meant to them – a look back to their college years and their friendship with Dean Joan.

Today would have been Dean Joan's 100th Birthday. Remembering the life she lived with grace and dignity and the many student lives she impacted. One of her many legacies is the Dean Joan Metcalf Schaefer Scholarship which since its founding in 1993, has awarded over $1.4 million to over 400 USC students.

So sad to report of Dean Joan's passing this morning, just a few weeks shy of her 96th birthday. She left us peacefully in her home in the Hollywood Hills, with her loving caregivers by her side. She touched the lives of thousands of USC students, both women and men, and will be remembered especially for her work with Mortar Board, Phi Beta Kappa and the Summer Cambridge program.
