I have been sitting quietly with this for a little while because it is very personal for me. Like the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, the horrific killing of Nex Benedict is a tragedy that will cast a shadow over our country forever. Living here in Los Angeles, it’s easy for us to think that this is far from our reality. But the truth is, anti-LGBTQ+ hate is growing all across this nation. An anti-LGBTQ+ protest at Saticoy Elementary turned violent last year. And trans and nonbinary kids, families, and educators are particularly at risk. A big part of the reason I became a teacher and am now running for School Board is because I know what it feels like to be afraid simply because of who you are. I wanted to make sure that other kids didn’t feel this way, and I worked hard to cultivate a welcoming and accepting culture in my classroom. Every kid should feel safe and valued in our public schools. Rest in pride, Nex. We will never forget you.
