Three weeks have flown by. We ended our summer institute by picnicking at Griffith Park and reading outloud our stories and poems. The topics ran the gamut — losing a home in the Altadena fires, remembering loved ones, horror, AEW and WWE, little league, rage. What a celebration it is to be able to tell our stories.

We hosted rising 12th graders at our campus for a weeklong workshop on writing the college personal statement. Led by our teacher leader and WP fellow Annabelle, students brainstormed, collaborated, reflected, and drafted. All under the beautiful Los Angeles sky, surrounded by aggressive squirrels. ;)

What a treat to have Laurie and Gilda share with the Summer Institute this week! Laurie shared with us several poetry strategies for maximum engagement, and Gilda shared how she uses writers notebooks to increase writing volume and skill building. Thank you, both!

Day 1 is in the books, and we are so excited to spend the next three weeks together. We started the day with a writing activity based off Joseph Fasano ‘s poem, “Instructions for having a soul.” Then, our co-director led us in community building activities and a longer writing activity. We ended the day by starting our book study written by Nicole Mirra and Antero Garcia . It’s truly a magical thing to have a space in which we can imagine and dream and create and hope together. My cup is full.

Our Summer Institute fellows played with legos today at our pre-institute workshop! Inspired by work on multimodal composition, we played, we created, and we wrote. We are excited to learn together this summer.
