Dr. Syliva Earle is making waves at USC!

In a recent conversation with USC students, Dr. Earle highlighted the dangers of deep sea mining, emphasizing its long term effects on our oceans and climate. Her urgent call to action reminds us that our future and fate is tied to our oceans, because as Dr. Earle wisely stated, “Without the ocean, there is no us.”

Dr. Earle is an explorer, author, and expert in oceanography and marine biology. She made history as the first woman to lead the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in 1990 and set the women's record for the deepest walk on the seafloor in 1986!

Dr. Ernest Wilson, the Director of the USC Annenberg Center for Third Space Thinking delved into a thought provoking conversation with author Johnathan Taplin, which centered on his latest book, “In The End of Reality: How Four Billionaires are Selling a Fantasy Future of the Metaverse, Mars, and Crypto.”

In their conversation, Taplin shed light on the personal backgrounds of some of the most prominent tech billionaires, and how their tech monopolies have brought on middle-class wage stagnation, the hollowing out of many American towns, a radical increase in income inequality, and unbounded public acrimony.

The conversation touched upon the significance of empathy and cultural competency in the age of AI, as well as how USC Annenberg can provide support to its students amidst these transformative times.
