Happy Friday AFRS family,

This Wednesday we hosted a beautiful open house at Santa Susana Hall, giving everyone a chance to meet the many programs and faculty that work alongside the department through a scavenger hunt (with many snacks included)! We wanted to thank everyone that showed up and made the event happen.

Last Thursday, on March 26th, Dr. Gammage and the Ethnics Studies Center for Research, Activism, and Community Empowerment (RACE) hosted a Inaugural Convening accompanied by Dr. Clenora Hudson-Weens, a renowned scholar & author of "Africana Womanism."

We wanted to thank Dr. Clenora for speaking at this event, as well as the many others that did. Moreover, we appreciate everyone that showed up and supported the message/conversation!

Welcome back AFRS family,

We hope that you've all had an amazing and restful Spring break, we wish that everyone's getting back into the groove of things nicely!

Nonetheless, today was our CSBS Major/Minor event, which will be hosted same time tomorrow, that allowed students to gain insight on what these possible career pathways offered. We thank everyone who attended today and wanted to encourage everyone who didn't get a chance to come today, to attend tomorrow if possible!

A huge thank you to Dr. Jade, Dr. Gammage, Dr. Selassie, Dr. Walee, and Prof Singleton for representing the Africana Studies Department in the National Council for Black Studies conference in Baltimore. The team were given a chance to discuss/share research, as well as engaging in said discipline.

We wanted to take a moment to appreciate them for attending the conference and representing our department!

We hope you've had an amazing last week before Spring break so far!

We wanted to inform you all of the Doctoral Research Study, hosted by Professor Mercer, and we want to further urge you all to participate if you have the chance! This study is aiming to highlight your voice on how the Ethnic Studies departments may contribute to inclusion and equity all around campus, in doing so, you'd have a chance of receiving a $20 Amazon gift card.

Last Wednesday, on the 18th, many were given the chance to attend the Mardi Gras Jazz event hosted by Dr. Brown at the Soraya.

It was a beautiful performance by the "Preservation Hall Jazz Band," that ultimately illustrated Black culture through the use of music across many moods.

Last Saturday many were given the opportunity to attend the 'Black Matador Family Brunch' event, and we are so grateful that you did!

Not only did this event host a space for Black Matadors alike, but it also granted students, and faculty, an abundant amount of resources for Black Matador success.

We appreciate everyone who came and enjoyed themselves!

Good afternoon AFRS family,

We wanted to give a grand thank you to everyone that came to the event of 'Commemorating The Sixteenth Anniversary of the Founding of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense," that was hosted this Wednesday!

It was such a beautiful and insightful event that seeked into understanding what the Black Panther Party stood for and what it means for us till this day.

This Friday we celebrated our Black Scholars Matter program and had the chance to listen to the message that their voices carried.

We wanted to thank the BSM panel for voicing issues such as the hardship that comes with being a Black scholar but also, the success that comes in many different shapes and sizes as well.

Moreover, being a Black scholar is just about academics as it is about our creativity, in which, was showcased in the beautiful fashion show that was given that illustrated Black culture in fashion throughout history!

Black poetry is an art that should be heard and appreciated, and this Thursday, at the Black House, we had the space to do just that.

We want to congratulate everyone that let us hear their work, emotions, and their impactful pieces. We also want to thank everyone that came out and allowed these voices to be heard/appreciated just as much!
