MUSEUM / Between November 2024 and March 2025, those in Los Angeles will be able to marvel at Moche and Nazca ceramics and textiles from the collections of two bastions of art in the city: LACMA and the Fowler Museum. The exhibition "Taming the Desert: Resilience, Religion, and Ancestors in Ancient Peru" uniquely features two parallel modes of artistic expression in dialogue and provides the opportunity to reflect on contemporary crises of climate, scarcity, and human resilience. Taming the Desert is presented by the Fowler Museum in collaboration with LACMA, and curated by Luis Muro Ynoñán, research affiliate at the .

INFO / These two examples of regalia, housed in the Museo Larco in Lima, demonstrate some of the incredible finery used by ancient elites along Peru’s coast. The objects featured in the first image were likely part of the funerary assemblage that accompanied a member of the Chimu elite buried in the capital of Chan Chan. Headdresses, necklaces, bracelets, breastplates, nose pieces, and ear ornaments are common elements of these ensembles. Although the attires featured here are made of a gold alloy and silver, respectively, other materials used in the production of elite regalia include Spondylus shell, bone, textiles, feathers and precious stones.

INFO / Sometimes, archaeologists don't have the chance to examine historical sites due to modern development. In cities like Cuzco, Peru, present-day construction often means that historical structures stay hidden underground. In this image, an Inca wall is revealed during road maintenance work near the Rimacpampa traffic circle. A few days later, these fitted stones were once again covered up by cement, pipes, and asphalt. Every day, thousands of people walk or drive over them with no knowledge of their existence.

INFO / Metallurgy in the Andes has long involved a wide range of tools and technologies to extract and shape desirable metals. Even though these technologies appeared in various contexts and time periods, practices such as alloying and smelting were common throughout many parts of the Andes. The first image here shows tools used by ancient metalworkers in Colombia, including stone chisels, gold chisels (which would have been useful since they are no harder than the material being shaped), a roller, and wax. The following images show a few of the items that were produced using these tools and other complementary technologies. ⁠

INFO /⁠ La metalurgia en los Andes requirió de la utilización de una amplia gama de herramientas y tecnologías para extraer y dar la forma deseada a los metales. Aunque estas tecnologías aparecieron en diversos contextos culturales, geográficos y cronológicos, algunas prácticas como la aleación y la fundición eran comunes en muchas partes de los Andes. INFO / Meet the culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus). This canid can be found across much of the Andes. Technically, the culpeo is not a true fox as it and its relatives belong to a unique South American genus. However, this doesn't stop the culpeo, which is known among many Quechua-speaking communities as atoq, from being portrayed as a fox-like trickster and mischievous figure in numerous Andean folktales. Some of atoq's escapades along with close analyses of Quechua storytelling can be found in Catherine J. Allen's “Foxboy: Intimacy and Aesthetics in Andean Stories” (University of Texas Press, 2011).

INFO / Conoce al zorro culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus). Este cánido se puede encontrar en gran parte de los Andes. Técnicamente, el zorro culpeo no es un verdadero zorro ya que tanto él como sus parientes pertenecen a un género taxonómico único en América del Sur. Sin embargo, esto no impide que el zorro culpeo, conocido entre muchas comunidades Quechua como atoq, sea retratado como una figura embaucadora y pícara parecida a un zorro en numerosas narrativas populares andinas. INFO / Located in San Agustin Street, in the historic center of Cuzco, one can find the building that is popularly known as Casa de los Cuatro Bustos. During imperial Inca times, this plot of land was occupied by an Inca elite architectural compound. Early in the colonial period, the site was appropriated by Gonzalo Pizarro who later sold it to Marquis Juan de Salas y Valdés. Salas y Valdés and his family were the first Spanish residents of the site which they adapted to an architectural style more attuned to their European/Spanish liking and traditions. During this architectural conversion process, the Salas y Valdés built a two-story complex upon the Inca foundations, incorporated an arched courtyard in its interior, and commissioned the carved facade that can be seen in the image. The four busts at the entrance of the colonial house depict Salas y Valdés and his family, together with their coat of arms.⁠

INFO / Some of the most impressive metal objects in South American history come from northern Colombia, where communities such as the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tayrona made exquisite artworks out of gold, silver, copper, platinum, and other metals. The remarkable piece to the right of the image is a poporo. Poporos and similar items have been used historically from northern Peru to Colombia as receptacles to store powdered lime. The long, thin applicator (seen on the left) is used when applying the lime to coca as it is chewed to intensify the properties of the plant.

INFO / Did you know that there is a painting in the Cuzco church of the Recoleta that depicts the 26 Martyrs of Japan? On February 5, 1597, a group of 26 Catholics were crucified in Nagasaki after Christianity had first been prohibited in the country. The group included six Franciscan missionaries from Spain, Mexico, and Portuguese India, three Japanese Jesuits, and 17 Japanese members of the Third Order of St. Francis. The martyrs were beatified in 1627 and 1629 and canonized in 1862. The group is not only commemorated through a museum and monument in Nagasaki itself but also in many churches around the world, including in Cuzco. In 1630, the Cuzqueño artist Lázaro Pardo de Lago painted a canvas for the choir of the Franciscan Iglesia de la Recoleta that depicts twelve of the martyrs. Interestingly, the Japanese martyrs in Pardo de Lago's work exhibit physical Indigenous Andean traits perhaps as a means for the local congregation to connect with the martyrs' suffering and sacrifice.

INFO / Pictured here along with wild lupin is part of Rumiñawi, a 4,721 meter (15,489 foot) tall stratovolcano in Ecuador. Although less famous than its neighbor Cotopaxi, Rumiñawi has its own place in history. The mountain is named after the Inca general Rumiñawi (“Stone Eye”), who is said to have kept gold and silver from the Spanish by hiding it in the nearby mountains. Today, that treasure is known as the Treasure of the Llanganatis. Many similar narratives about hidden Inca wealth are found across the Andes. Whether these histories are true, false, or somewhere in between, Rumiñawi is still remembered as an individual who fiercely resisted Spanish occupation, and his eponymous mountain is a major Ecuadorian landmark.

INFO / Religious and secular architecture built during the colonial and republican periods in Cuzco often exhibited fine mural paintings on its walls. With the passage of time, many of these murals have been covered with layers of concrete, lime, clay, plaster, and paint. While the church of San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas has become world renowned for its artistic program, its colorful painted decoration was not an isolated example but rather how many contemporary churches, schools, and elite houses in the area would have looked. Instances of preserved mural painting exhibit a clear European influence in the themes depicted, and showcase a style known as Andean Baroque. At the same time, the making of these murals is grounded in Indigenous Andean traditions, including the use of colorful soils as pigments and aguacolla as adhesive. Although the authors of most of these works remain unknown today, they seem to be the product of teams of artists working collectively under the direction of a master painter.
