๐Ÿ›As we head into summer itโ€™s important to keep your children actively engaged in learning to avoid the โ€œsummer slideโ€!

โฌ‡๏ธHereโ€™s more information on the 7 ways to keep your children active and engaged throughout the summer months

โœ๏ธDaily Journaling: Encourage your children to keep a journal of all the activities, trips, etc that you engage in over the summer. This helps to maintain writing and reading skills.

๐Ÿ“–Summer Reading: Put together a summer reading list for your child and take them to the library weekly to check out new books together! Set aside a scheduled time every day for the whole family to read for 20-30 minutes together.

๐Ÿž๏ธGet Outside: Explore your neighborhood and local parks. Check for free local nature programs in your area so they can learn more about the local plants and wildlife.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธTake a Field Trip: Let your children pick one or two local museums or a zoo or aquarium. Look into local cooking or art classes that you can take together. Enroll them into a new sport or try out a gymnastics or dance class.

๐ŸŽจGet Crafty: Help your child make a birdhouse or maybe do some fun tie-dye to celebrate it being summertime! There are NO LIMITS when using your imagination to unleash your creative side.

๐ŸคVolunteer: Check out local volunteer opportunities to keep your child engaged in the community. Volunteering will help to build leadership skills that will be beneficial to them in the future.

๐ŸคธStay Active & Healthy: Try to limit the amount of time spent sitting around on screens and get your children out to be active. Rainy Day? Play the Floor is Lava inside and turn your home into a fiery lava pit that they must stay off of. If you want to get outside, explore the world of Geo-Caching!

๐Ÿ‘ชThe โ€œSummer Slideโ€ is a real issue, so do what you can to prevent your children from sliding too far backward. Keep them active and engaged this summer and make some great family memories.

๐Ÿ“ขToday weโ€™d like to recognize one of our referral partners, Naomi Ester Rahmani.

๐Ÿ‘คNaomi is the owner, founder and Clinical Director of Achieve Speech Associates, located in Encino, CA. She leads an amazing team of Clinicians that are devoted to helping their patients find their voice.

โžก๏ธShe is ASHA Certified and PROMPT trained.

๐Ÿง When asked about Aphasia she told us this, โ€œAphasia is a loss of language, not a loss of intellect."

โ“If youโ€™d like more information about her practice, head over to their page Achieve Speech Associates and click on their website in their about section.

โ˜€๏ธJune is Aphasia Awareness Month.

โžก๏ธWhile itโ€™s very rare for Aphasia to affect children, we still want to bring awareness to the cause.

๐Ÿ‘€Finding the words can be a journey, but understanding goes beyond speech.

๐ŸคJoin us in raising awareness for Aphasia Awareness Month.

๐ŸŒ‰Let's bridge the communication gap together.

โ“Is your child is exhibiting symptoms of Aphasia or do you have any other concerns about their speech/language?

๐Ÿ“ฒContact a speech therapist to schedule an evaluation.

๐ŸŒˆThere is hope on the horizon, it starts with making a call and being an advocate for your child.

Small group learning involves a few students working together on academic tasks or projects. This instructional strategy can be facilitated by educators or occur among peers. The small group typically ranges from 3 to 6 students, providing an intimate setting that fosters interaction, collaboration, and personalized attention.
โœ… Educators can give more one-on-one time, ensuring each childโ€™s specific needs and questions are addressed
โœ… Children can learn from each other, particularly beneficial for kinesthetic learners who thrive on interactive hands-on activities
โœ… Group discussions and problem-solving tasks stimulate critical thinking and see different perspectives
โœ… The pace of learning can be adjusted to suit the groupโ€™s needs, allowing for in-depth exploration of topics

There tend to be 4 types of learners - Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing and Kinesthetic. Itโ€™s important for educators and caregivers to be mindful of each learner as it will help to develop impactful learning strategies. An easy way to remember each learning style is by using the acronym VARK:

๐Ÿ‘€ Visual Learners: Visual learners prefer to take in information using charts, maps, graphs, diagrams, and more. However, this type of learning style does not include photographs or videos. One way you can differentiate instruction for visual learners is by using graphic organizers to teach a lesson. A flow chart might be used to explain a scientific process, for example.

๐Ÿ“ข Auditory Learners: This learning style describes students who learn best when information is heard or spoken. They benefit from lectures, group discussion, and other strategies that involve talking things through. To help auditory learners learn, teachers can post audio recordings of lessons on the class website, or incorporate group activities that require students to explain concepts to their classmates.

๐Ÿ“– Reading/Writing Learners: Students who have a reading/writing preference prefer information to be presented using words. They love to read and perform well on written assignments such as stories or book reports. A great way to help these students learn is by having them describe diagrams or charts using written statements. Then, they can study their notes later to better retain the information.

๐Ÿšฒ Kinesthetic Learners: Kinesthetic learners learn best when they can use tactile experiences and carry out a physical activity to practice applying new information. Give these students a working example of an idea or process, or task them with recreating experiments to illustrate concepts.

Group learning can be a game-changer for every VARK learner! ๐Ÿ“šโœจ Group learning offers diverse perspectives which can enhance creativity, peer support to boost motivation, strengthen collaborative problem-solving skills, and improve communication and teamwork.

How do you make sure you are incorporating learning using this VARK method in your classrooms?

Literacy and writing are the keys to unlocking a world of imagination, creativity, and endless possibilities. Let's nurture our children's love for reading and writing, helping them build a strong foundation for a brighter future. Together, we can open the doors to knowledge, confidence, and success. ๐Ÿ“–โœ๏ธ

Encourage self-talk while readingโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ“–Do I know anything about this story or author?
๐Ÿ“–What do I think the title means - what will this story be about?
๐Ÿ“–After reading the the first paragraph, do I know the narrator, point of view, settingโ€ฆ?
๐Ÿ“–What else? What other ideas or possibilities exist?

Introduce writing strategies to spark creativityโ€ฆ
โœ๏ธK-W-L Strategy fosters studentsโ€™ strategic thinking by enabling them to approach a prompt in a purposeful way.
โœ๏ธRACES is an acronym used to help students remember writing structure. Restate. Answer. Cite. Explain. Summarize.
โœ๏ธStory Mountain method - Help students visualize the plot of rising conflict and resolution.
โœ๏ธโ€Just Write!โ€ method - Inspire creative writing for fun! Students will build confidence ad improve their skills.

4 ways parents can support self-advocacy skills:

๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ณ-๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜† is all about communicating needs.

Hereโ€™s how parents/caregivers can help:

โ˜… ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด
The more we listen to our childrenโ€™s needs (big and small), the more they will share with us and ask for help when needed.

Allow kids the space to solve problems independently, then add support by suggesting ideas they can try.

โ˜… ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜
Instead of โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you done?โ€ try asking, โ€œHow can I help you get this done?โ€ Come from a place of support.
