At the start of every school year all CalCreative students make unique self portraits. Some are inspired by their identity, others are inspired by local landmarks or world-renown artists. Our self portrait exhibition is our celebration of our community’s beautiful diversity, where everyone’s uniqueness, expression and creative voice are embraced and supported.

Have you ever heard your child say, “I’m just not good at math,” or “I can’t do this”?  

Dr. Carol Dweck, a child psychologist, conducted a longitudinal study that showed how children view their abilities directly shapes their success. 

Dr. Dweck highlights two distinct ways of thinking: 

* Fixed Mindset: The belief that intelligence and talent are set at birth. Children with this mindset often avoid challenges because they are afraid of making mistakes. 
 
* Growth Mindset: The belief that abilities can be developed through dedication, hard work, and good strategies. These children see mistakes as necessary steps to get better at learning something. 

We can teach our kids to love challenges. Most importantly, introduce the power of the word “yet.” When your child says, “I can’t do this,” gently remind them, “You can’t do this yet.”

Third Grade has been exploring the relationship between Identity and Symbols. We looked at popular symbols for peace, Earth Day, emojis, and other pop culture images. Students use magazines, markers, pastels, and acrylics to show their identity by creatingTattoo/Identity Sleeves.
