More than a visit.

An open studio, a working culture, and a network in motion. Admitted students experienced USC Architecture through the people who define it.

The work matters, but so does the culture behind it. Conversations, mentorship, and shared ambition shaping an environment that extends well beyond the classroom.

This is what you step into.

What does it mean to study architecture in Los Angeles?

For M.Arch student Evelyn Rivera, proximity matters. Being embedded in a city with one of the highest concentrations of globally recognized design firms, combined with faculty who are actively shaping that culture, creates a direct and continuous connection between studio and practice.

At USC, the city is not just context. It is an extension of the classroom, where ideas, people, and opportunities intersect in real time.

SBX Perspectives highlights the voices of students, faculty, and firm leaders reflecting on the USC Spring Break Externship and the broader culture of learning through practice.

We are excited to announce the launch of the AC Martin Fellowship in Housing and City Design at USC Architecture for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Created in partnership with AC Martin @acmartininc , this new fellowship supports incoming graduate students committed to addressing the housing challenges facing Los Angeles through design, research, and policy-driven inquiry. Open to students entering the MAARS City Design & Housing, M.Arch +2, and M.Arch +3 programs, the fellowship provides $10,000 per year in tuition support, professional mentorship, and hands-on engagement with real housing issues in Southern California.

Throughout its nearly 120-year history, AC Martin has grown alongside Los Angeles and, with it, has been committed to addressing housing needs — from growth to inequity and affordability, which continue to be among the City’s biggest challenges. ACM has designed over 60,000 units by helping shape policies that affect housing creation in LA, partnering with some of the most active profit- and non-profit-housing developers in LA, and volunteering for causes that support the unhoused population in finding permanent, supportive solutions. Through this fellowship, AC Martin and USC will leverage this platform to effect positive change and increase housing production in LA.

Fellows will pursue applied research focused on land use, construction cost, operations, and financing, working alongside USC faculty, AC Martin leaders, and industry experts. Research culminates in a final publication and presentation proposing actionable, equitable strategies to advance housing production and affordability.

To apply, submit a standard USC Architecture graduate application and upload a one-page Statement of Interest under Supplemental Materials indicating your interest in the fellowship.

Apply now and help shape the future of housing and city design in Los Angeles.
