Austrian syndrome should be considered whenever pneumococcal bacteremia occurs in the setting of severe pneumonia with neurologic or cardiac abnormalities. Early echocardiography, prompt central nervous system (CNS) evaluation when feasible, CNS-penetrating antimicrobial therapy, and coordinated multidisciplinary management remain central to recognizing and treating this destructive form of invasive pneumococcal disease.

🫀🧬 Cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic (CKM) health meets cancer risk 🎗️ The CKM syndrome is emerging as a powerful framework to understand the interconnected burden of cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic disease. But could it also help us better understand cancer risk?

🔬 In this large UK Biobank analysis, cancer risk increased progressively across CKM stages 1–3, remaining elevated in stage 4. Even more interestingly, multiomics analyses revealed that progression across CKM stages was accompanied by distinct immune and metabolic pathways:
🔹 Early stages ➡️ leukocyte/lymphocyte activation and altered cell–cell adhesion
🔹 Intermediate stages ➡️ increasing T-cell and NK-cell immune tolerance
🔹 Advanced CKM ➡️ dominant NK-cell tolerance and chronic tissue pathology
🔹 Metabolic mediators also shifted across stages, from HDL and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins toward LDL-related pathways

💡 These findings further expand the concept of CKM syndrome beyond traditional cardiovascular and renal outcomes, highlighting a potentially important intersection between metabolic dysfunction, immune dysregulation and cancer development.
