We welcome people who are curious or passionate about firearms, but tired of the stigma and stereotype of being a gun owner in liberal circles, and being the minority in conservative-dominated gun spaces.

So I flew in last night from Mexico City to teach a special private Pistol 101 class today.

Because I am not able to own guns (not until obtaining permanent residency) in Mexico, any chance I can get some live fire in before teaching a class is valuable.

One of my favorite ways to assess myself is from a cold start, no warm-up.

Here's one of the drills from My Own Defender LLC 40 round qualification Fabio has for his volunteer church security that tests a lot of shooting and moving:

Run from 25yds to 10yds and shoot 4 to body, 2 to head box.

I also try to find competition matches on days I'm here but not booked, so I'm shooting OH SHOOT - PRG Hybrid Match this weekend with a client who's a fast learner and new to competition.👊🏾💥

My Bu****it meter immediately went off when this was originally reported last year:

Off duty deputy shoots & kills roommate mistaking her for an intruder when she came back from walking her dog in the early morning.

Now 1 year later, details that it was the deputy's fiance and she shot her 9 times, including a headshot from 8 inches away, only adds to the red flags.

I am pretty sure if you live with someone who walks their dog, it wasn't the 1st time she walked the dog at 5am.

Why automatically jump to the conclusion it's an intruder and not your fiance coming back from a dog walk?

Why a shot from 8 inches to the head?

We will never know because we only have this deputy's word for what happened.

And again, the defense is claiming it was "acccidental" when any act where you shoot a gun unintentionally is never an accident -- it is absolutely negligent.

We teach clients that the 4th & final safety rule Alway know your target means you must positively identify who it is before you shoot.

I understand why the victim's family thinks the criminal charge should be higher.

I tell Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) clients before walking out the door, do some practice draws from different arm positions.

Daily reps build consistency and subconscious skill on demand.

Because under fight or flight, there's no time to think -- only react.

And you don't automatically rise to some magical ability you never practiced.

What's the point of pulling the trigger if you fumble and can't consistently get your gun drawn from under clothing in under 1.5 seconds?

What's the point of pulling the trigger if you can't consistently see your sights or dot because you never practice your presentation?

80%-90% of practice is this -- all the manipulations and muscle memory to prepare you to be on target.

It's free and done at home -- so no excuses to not dry practice daily.

Live fire is only 10%-20% of becoming a competent, skilled shooter.

Live fire is to confirm your dry practice and putting everything together.

What a fun Wed Night Steel Match!🔥

I hadn't shot this match since 2024 and now that it's run by OH SHOOT - PRG it's very organized and so much better attended.

Got to introduce Val to her 1st competition and shoot together as a team with Rima, our newest instructor.

I think it's important as instructors to keep pushing ourselves in our professional development and push each other to be better.

Great to shoot with Cortney Able on our squad and amazing to see Stephanie from Raven Wing Limited 💜

Oh I took a ricochet to the chin too -- it's always a risk when shooting steel targets.

For newbies, minimum distance to shoot steel targets is 15yds for pistols (some say 10yds but I like to err on conservative side) and 90-100yds for ri**es.

What happens when decision makers at the top who don't know how to shoot, work behind a cushy desk, and totally ignorant of the latest advances, keep folks carrying guns like it was still the 80s.

I have a friend who works for a security company. I have general disdain for typical armed guards and police officers because they rarely train and aren't that skilled.

However, my friend is the rare professional who got into this work for the right reasons, treats everyone with compassion and respect, and prioritizes de-escalation and conflict avoidance.

He hopes to never use his gun but is more disciplined than the average cop and trains regularly on his own time. His duty gun is his own gun with a red dot optic.

He told me their upper management called in all 7000 of their guards for weapon inspection and told him he's not allowed to have a pistol optic on his gun.

In other words, they want him to handicap himself and not be as accurate and successful in protecting himself and others if lives were at stake.

So now he's had to remove the optic and go back to shooting with irons.🫠

It reminds me of a certain police department in L.A. County that also didn't allow Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit holders to have optics on their guns.🤷‍♂️

The "professionals" and large organizations absolutely don't automatically keep up with the times.

Technology like optics and more efficient techniques often come from the civilian competition world first.

Military and law enforcement are often the last ones to adopt the latest advances, because they are so ego-driven and resistant to change.

But people who base their gun knowledge on movies and pop culture automatically put the professionals on a pedestal because they're portrayed as subject matter experts when they're the worst informed.
