While most refunds are issued within 21 days if you’ve got no issues and opted for Direct Deposit, you can always check its status at irs.gov/refunds 👀 NOTE: Your tax preparer does not have special ESP powers greater than this tool, so download the IRS2Go app and let them enjoy their .

Don’t get suckered by FOMO marketing nonsense! YOU know better:

A big refund means you gave the government an interest-free loan all year. In a world where you can get over 4% APR in an FDIC-insured high-yield savings account, locking away your money all year makes little financial sense.

If you’re an employee on payroll, use the irs w4 calculator to dial in your withholding so you get more of your hard-earned money directed to you, not Uncle Sugar, with each paycheck.

If you’re freelance or own a small business, keep track of your income and expenses, preferably with bookkeeping software, and pay the correct amount of quarterly estimated taxes for your business, but not a penny more! Your tax preparer or tax software can help with that.

Taxes are year round! If you keep on top of your income and expenses, you’ll not only be a boss bitch with your big financial picture, you’ll level up your economic situation and be able to plan for the future. There are only two certainties in life: Death and Taxes. We’re playing the long game, y’all!

Friendly reminder: An extension only grants you an extension to file the actual tax forms, NOT to pay the taxes, which are still due Apr 18!

Don’t know how much you owe? Guesstimate! You can always claim a refund to get back the excess.

Resist the urge to flake out completely however. A failure to file penalty is 5% per month of tax due! A failure to pay penalty is only 0.5% per month.

You can go on IRS.gov and file your extension for FREE with their partners, or you can make an extension payment online which automatically extends you. And remember to check with your state for their extension rules too!

And of course, this year the Apr 18 deadline to file AND pay has been extended for storm-affected regions in CA, AL, GA, and TN, and maybe more. Check the IRS website to see if your county’s deadline has been moved.

That DIY glow… Gentle Readers outside the FEMA declaration zone*, it’s getting awfully close to the deadline, and if you’re still stuck under a pile of crumpled, wet receipts, you’re gonna wanna file an extension! If you think you’ll be owing a bit, estimate your payment and send it in before Apr 18 because an extension extends your filing deadline, not your payment deadline! Failure to file penalties are steep so get on it pleazz…

*Most of California’s deadline has been extended to Oct 16 for this year due to severe weather

CA is following the IRS’ lead and extending the filing and paying deadline for your 2022 tax return, as well as some estimated taxes too!

This means you get an automatic extension until Oct 16 and incur no penalties for paying or filing by Oct 16.

Other perks include being able to fund your IRA & HSA later in the year, so you can hold off on filing until you’re sure you secured that bag in October.

Check the IRS & FEMA websites to ensure your address is located in a disaster zone!

If your filing address is in one of these qualified disaster zones, you automatically qualify:

Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Inyo, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Ventura, Yolo, and Yuba
