If you keep your partner in front of you, you will have an easier time retaining your guard.
Here’s some tips on how you can do that but stay on your back.
1. Use your knees to generate momentum and reduce the surface area of your body.
2. Use your elbows to move. If your partner is close enough, you can frame on your partner.
3. Avoid putting your hands on the floor. Ready to frame on your knees.

Don’t be like me and get caught with a flying armbar.
1. Use your lead foot to make connection.
2. Keep your lead hand and lead leg close to each other.
3. Use your spare hand to keep moving and keep your partner in front of you
We’ve been working on armbars for few weeks… I wanted to keep working on them but people were saying they had enough…
So we put it to a test. If Hugo can get Chris (who is bigger and more experienced), we will stop working on armbars. If Hugo can’t… I owe Chris a new gi 😭

When we attack the arm from mount, we try to focus on
1. Separation of the elbow. Ideally their elbow over their shoulder line.
2. Head off the mat. This significantly reduces their ability to bridge.
Smother choke is… optional 😂
Here are some details on the leg positioning and how to sweep from single leg x.
1. Ensure the heel doesn’t move. Hand or elbow is okay.
2. Make sure your legs form a loop above the knee and your hips are high.
3. Hook the far leg.
4. When you jump, go up and over the knee.
What happens as you are attacking the arm, they come up on top? You can either threaten the arm by off balancing your partner, and if they over compensate, spin under.
This is probably one of the most difficult grips to address. Biggest insight is to find ways to limit your partners shoulder from moving. Try this out!
When your partner is on top and you are attacking the arm, either they will try to stack you or pull their arm out. Losing the arm is frustrating when you are so close… here’s a tip on how to control their posture and secure the arm.
