Los Alamos schools will be closed May 9 - 15 out of an abundance of caution with the fire.

Los Alamos County has moved into “set” status according to the “Ready, Set, Go” protocol. There are currently NO evacuation orders for Los Alamos County. Out of an abundance of caution, Los Alamos Public Schools will be closed next week, May 9-13, to ensure that students and staff are home with families if there is a need to evacuate. There will be no before or after school programs, clubs, activities, or sports. The safety of our students, staff, and community is our top priority. Although it is not possible to know for certain what the fire will do, we do know that it is important that our students are home with their families, if possible, if an evacuation is ordered.

Schools will not provide remote instruction. Staff will be impacted by any potential evacuation and need to be able to prepare and focus on their families. We will provide you regular updates through email, the website, and local media. LAPS will return students to school as soon as it is safe to do so.

We are grateful to all of the people who are working so hard to control this fire.

Note of thanks, appreciation, and gratitude,

Now that the dust has settled from all of the retirement gatherings, I wanted to pause for a moment to say thank you. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as Superintendent of the Los Alamos Public Schools. Teachers, thank you for inspiring students and helping to guide their learning. To all of the staff that support and lead the teachers, thank you for making it all work so smoothly. Parents and families, thank you for who you are and for meeting the challenges of raising children in today’s world. And especially to the students, thank you for all of the very thoughtful and kind letters and cards.

It has truly been an honor and a pleasure to be part of LAPS. The Los Alamos Schools are unique and a very special place. It is the people of LAPS who make it all work.

At the end of the day, it is all about those who will be ready to go on the first day of school in August. Be well and do good work.
