Another way my school psychology experience has helped in my Mindful Moving Kids classes:adapting to any space a school has available!
Historically, School Psychologists haven't always had dedicated office space in schools, and we find ourselves finding any private space we can to complete our work with students, including storage closets (yes, I did reorganize a storage closet to make room for a table and chairs so that I could complete testing with students).
Now, for my kids' yoga & mindfulness classes, I use those same skills to find hallways, corners of the gym, or spare square footage to create our space to Move. Breathe. Play. Regulate.

I think of self-regulation on a sliding scale: we move up and down the scales of energy, output and mood throughout the day, and self-regulation is the process of noticing and reacting to those changes according to our environment, current needs, and goals.

Tweens and Teens need their space - and have many ways to tell us π
A yoga practice can be a great space for them to tune in to themselves, learn strategies to cope with stress, and find some calm - and now they have their own space to develop their yoga practice:

Most of the time, children come into Mindful Moving Kids class ready to move, have fun, be silly, play games, and expend some energy. And we do all those things.
But in both the virtual class and in-person program this week, the vast majority of little yogis showed up with more subdued energy.
When asked, they reported feeling tired, "stressed", and "too busy" . Even the kiddos who usually crave challenging poses and fast-paced activity asked for relaxing yoga.
At first, I was surprised, and not a little concerned: What is going on?!?!
But I relied on my psychologist's training, and met kiddos where they were, rather than proceeding with the planned lesson. We started slowly, with some guided meditation and restorative poses, and eventually used breath and movement to "up-regulate" and increase energy and focus levels. By the end of class, I had groups of little yogis who reported feeling calm and maybe even tired, but with happy smiles and energy to take on the rest of their day.
It's not magic. It's brain-based yoga for kids. And it's effective.
