Name of Pose: Chair
🕉
Important Cues:
*From Tadasana bend knees and lower hips. Hips should never be below your knees.
*Keep weight back in heels, but toes still rooted into the floor.
*Knees should stay above the ankles. If you can't see toes when looking down, you went down too far. Bring weight back and hips up.
*Let palms face each other as arms rise up, towards the ceiling, at an angle. Arms should not be straight up to the ceiling.
*Make sure your shoulders stay down away from ears as you reach through fingers.
*Finally, make sure you can see upper arms/elbows in peripheral vision.
*Try to stay in this pose for 30-60 seconds. Remember to take deep breaths and relax your chin.
*To exit: press thru feet, straighten legs, let arms reach up, and eyes follow hands.
🕉
Variations & Medifications:
Toe balance:
*Bring weight forward into balls-of-feet, heels lift up. This will challenge balance so take your time.
*To bring more support and strengthening into legs, place a block between thighs and squeeze.
🕉
Twisted chair:
*Make sure your knees do not go past your toes to help keep your weight back on your heels with your toes still on the ground.
*Strike a pose like me or place your elbow on your legs with the palms of your hands together.
*Make sure your hips do not go below your knees! That’s too much work!
🕉
Cross-legged chair:
*While in chair, take one leg and cross it over the other in a figure 4. Maintain balance, focusing on a distant point, and continue deep breaths.
🕉
Benefits:
This pose works the muscles of the arms and legs, but it also stimulates the diaphragm and heart giving you a burst of energy.
🕉
It's a great stretch for shoulders. A gentler, yet equally challenging, variation is making field goals with your arms. Keep elbows in line with shoulders for this one.
