Our ISE Host Family Story...Meet Burak and the Griffin Family

"About 3 weeks ago I was getting ready to announce the High School football game like any other Friday. I was talking with a good friend who also happens to run the area’s foreign exchange student program. She was telling me about a boy from Turkey who was trying to find a host family that would accept him because he had a little less than a day to get on a flight to the US or he would age out of the exchange program.
I said “I wish I could help, but we just don’t have the space in the house and our lives are so busy as it is… plus the extra costs… just not a great time for us but I feel bad for the kid to miss an opportunity to come to the US”. Then she told me that I could serve as a “Welcoming Family” and just accept him for a week until a more permanent placement could be found. And there are no extra costs for them because they are funded by their own parents and the exchange program. We just have to provide a bed, and 3 meals a day. Easy enough. I said “oh I can host pretty much anyone for a week. That’s easy. Tell them to send him our way.”
We pushed the application process through that night and he got on a plane to the States the next morning. When he arrived he was the most polite, respectful, humble young man I’d ever met. When I walk into a room, he stands up and won’t sit until I sit out of “respect for his elders”. He brought us a BEAUTIFUL Turkish coffee setting and introduced us to Turkish coffee which is AMAZING! Much better than American coffee.
He has taught us about his culture. He’s shared with us what a great opportunity this is for him and how grateful he is to have it. He excels in school, and hopes to graduate from the high school here so that he can qualify to attend an American University, which the principal of the school told me last night, he will have no problem doing because of how smart he is. He’s FULL of life and questions and curiosity about American culture, conversational English, Christianity, Existentialism, and we have long 2-3 hour conversations each night at the dinner table.
We thought he would be an extra kid to worry about and feed and that he would come with added stress, but he is so helpful around the house, keeping the little kids entertained, and he’s gotten us out of our routine of coming home, ordering takeout food, and going to bed. Instead, we cook because his reaction to American food has made us remember how terrible most of it is for your health, play basketball and football outside in the yard, go to the boxing gym (because he loves boxing), Braden has a guy his age to hangout with when he’s over for the weekend instead of just getting bombarded by the littles, and I think I’ve lost 11lbs since he arrived.
We thought it would be a hindrance inviting someone new into our home but it’s done nothing but improve our lives. We even took him to Dollywood because he’s never seen or ridden a roller coaster. When we got back in the car he told us very solemnly that it was in the top 5 of best days of his life.
His name is Burak and we now consider him family. If you’ve ever been curious about hosting a foreign exchange student… do it! There’s SO MUCH to learn and so much you can teach them. It’s literally a life changing experience and a beautiful exchange of culture."

Meet the Steadman family from Lawrenceburg, Tennessee!

Over the past 11 years, our family has been blessed to host 9 different exchange students from 9 different countries. Each one has been a unique and wonderful learning experience. We were hesitant at first. How could we handle someone else's grown kid? Could we communicate effectively with them? How would we keep them entertained in our small town? How much would we have to alter our lifestyle to make them comfortable? What about religious beliefs, discipline, their influence on our children? So many questions came racing through our minds. Honestly, we were nervous. But, we took the plunge! And, we are forever grateful! We learned that kids are kids no matter where they are born. They can communicate. We were surprised at their ability to understand us enough to communicate. Tennessee accents can be a struggle sometimes. Our small town had so much to offer-school, sports, movies, the fair, church events, state park, plays, shopping, dining. They were enthralled with our community. We didn't have to change much in the way of our lives. Yes, there was an extra person or two. But, our home was full of laughter, love, typical teen behaviors, their friends from school and church, and stories about new American discoveries. There are ups and downs, but who doesn't have those! Every single one went to church with us. They followed our rules fairly well and learned new ways to understand others. We could never afford to travel the world. We wanted our children to realize there was more to life than where they were born. So, exchange hosting brought the world to our home. We still communicate with every single one of our exchange sons. Several have come back to visit and more visits are planned. Thanks to exchange, we are the proud parents of 12 sons- three by birth and nine by airplane! Our only regret was not hosting sooner!
