Day 12 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

As a survivor, I want to acknowledge that this month can bring up a lot. Hearing other people’s stories can help us feel understood, but it can also bring back memories we wish we didn’t have.

Today, I’m making beef stew and giving myself permission to stay in my pajamas, watch a movie, take a bath, and journal about what I’ve been feeling. Taking care of myself matters while I’m using my voice.

Your voice matters too, and you get to decide when, how, and with whom you share your story. You deserve support whether you speak publicly or keep your healing private.

What helps you take care of yourself when emotions come up? And if I started a regular live where we could talk and build community, what days and times would work for you?

Day 11 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Leaving an abusive relationship can take more than one attempt. I know because it took me a couple times myself.

There is so much behind that decision that other people don’t see. Fear, children, and trying to figure out how to leave safely. ā€œJust leaveā€ doesn’t begin to cover it.

If you’re in that place, I see you. You deserve support, people you can trust, and a plan that considers your safety. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

And if you’ve left but forget how much courage that took, give yourself some credit. I’m proud of you, and I’m learning to be proud of myself too.

Day 9 of DV Awareness month. Today let’s talk about lives lost due to DV violence. And perpetrators are in the numbers too.

How do you feel about it? I’m ready for us to start learning and being better all around.

No healthy minded person chooses to hurt another person. Especially someone they claim to love.

Day 8 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. What was the first red flag you noticed?

Looking back, mine was how fast the relationship moved. Then came the isolation and changes in his behavior. At the time, I didn’t understand what I was seeing. I can recognize it now, but that doesn’t make his abuse my fault.

Sometimes we see the red flags while we’re in it. Sometimes we understand them after we leave.

If you feel comfortable sharing, what did you notice, either at the time or looking back? Your experience might help someone recognize what they’re going through.

Day 7 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Part of my recovery from abuse has been learning to prioritize rest and self care without feeling guilty for needing it.

Today, that looks like taking a nap while listening to bilateral beats. For me, it’s helped slow my racing thoughts, refill my energy cup, and lower my anxiety.

Other days, I turn to journaling, EFT tapping, breathwork, Reiki, or making art. I’m learning to listen to what I need and give myself time to recharge. Some days, that means letting myself rest when there’s still plenty on my to do list.

What do you do for self care? What helps when your mind won’t slow down or your cup feels empty?

Day 6 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Today I’m looking at how Ohio law defines domestic violence, and as a survivor, I have some thoughts.
It definitely explains domestic violence but do survivors get truly seen in the courts?
What are your thoughts on what the law says? Do you feel it captures what survivors go through?

Day 5 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. (Sorry I said the wrong number this morning. Lol) šŸ˜ Let’s talk about the forms of abuse that don’t always get talked about.

When people hear domestic violence, they tend to think of physical abuse. But there is so much more that can happen without someone ever putting their hands on you.

Emotional, verbal, financial, sexual, and spiritual abuse deserve to be recognized too. Being controlled, threatened, isolated, or torn down matters, even when there are no bruises to show.
