When It Needs Doing WIND is a non-profit organization working in the highlands of Guatemala.

We are currently training rural pastors and working with a Christian primary school, Colegio Horeb in Cotzal Guatemala.

Students at Colegio Horeb had the opportunity to experience a piece of Maya history this week.

Representatives from Guatemala’s Ministry of Culture and Sports visited the school to demonstrate the traditional Maya ball game. The game existed long before modern soccer and traditionally held ceremonial and sacred meaning in Maya culture.

The performers dressed according to historical traditions and used a ball made from natural rubber. Along with the demonstration, they shared the history and meaning of the game with the students.

What a fun way for the students to learn more about the history and culture of their region!

We’ve officially broken ground on the fourth building at Colegio Horeb!

What began with prayer continues to grow, and we are grateful to see another step forward in providing space for students to learn, grow, and be discipled in San Juan Cotzal.

As construction begins, we’re also sharing a new video that tells the story of how this campus came to be, a journey marked by prayer, waiting, faith, and ultimately God’s provision.

Please continue praying for the construction of this new building, for the students and teachers of Colegio Horeb, and for God to use this campus for generations to come.

In one week, the dental team will be on the ground in Guatemala! Their trip is from October 9-19. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare to serve in San Juan Cotzal.

Pray that God will use their hands to bring healing and that both the team members and those they serve will be blessed by the experience. 🙏

Today, October 1, is Children’s Day in Guatemala, and we are celebrating the beautiful children at Colegio Horeb!

Every child is a precious gift from God. Seeing these children grow and learn gives us hope for the future of San Juan Cotzal. We are grateful to be part of their lives and for the teachers and families who care for them each day.

Please pray that each child at Horeb knows they are loved by God. Pray for their teachers and families as they help these children grow in their faith.

This month, we’ve been looking back at how the Colegio Horeb campus took shape. We also want to thank the people who built it. They worked with the confidence that their labor was not in vain.

These photos from 2022 show some of that work up close. Workers tied the steel reinforcement and built the classroom walls. Later, the floors were finished, and the rooms began to look ready for students.

We are grateful for everyone who helped build Horeb, and for everyone who prayed and gave to make the campus possible. Thank you for being part of this school’s story.

As the school leaders and the WIND community prayed for a new campus, they also prayed that Colegio Horeb would be a light to the community of San Juan Cotzal. With solar energy, that prayer has been answered in a very literal way. When the power goes out in the town, Horeb's light still shines on the hill overlooking the community.

The solar energy system also helps keep everyday parts of the campus running, including the water pump, computer lab, and lighting around the school.

Earlier this year, we shared a video about the project and why reliable power matters for the students and teachers at Horeb.

One of the most useful additions to the Colegio Horeb campus has been the covered sports court.

These photos show the court taking shape in 2024, from the concrete slab and steel framing to the finished covered space. Today the court hosts sports, student presentations, school events, devotions, and other gatherings.

It has become an important part of everyday school life at Colegio Horeb. We are grateful for everyone whose prayers and generosity helped make spaces like this possible.

This month we are focusing on the growth of the Horeb campus. Of course, we know it is never just about the buildings. It is about the students and the new generation being raised inside them.

These photos show a school that is alive. Seeing the faces of these students and the opportunities this new campus has created brings us so much joy.

Happy Independence Day to our friends in Guatemala. Today, September 15, marks the signing of the Act of Independence of Central America in 1821, declaring independence from Spanish rule. At Colegio Horeb, Independence Day activities began before the holiday and continues throughout the month.

It is a joy to see the students celebrate Guatemala and participate in these traditions together!
