Lonsdale Karate Dedicated to helping people better themselves through karate, kobudo, and aikido. We teach classical Okinawan Karate and Kobudo.

Tim has trained in Japan and is directly connected to Akamine Hiroshi Sensei, the President of the Karate and Kobudo associations to which the dojo belongs. Tim is the senior foreign Karateka in the Organization. He was also the first licensed Kobudo instructor for the Shimbukan system in the US. He is supported by several black belts, all with many years of experience. We have classes on Monday through Friday for Karate, and on Tuesday and Thursday for Kobudo and on Saturday for Aikido. Age 4-6 Karate M-W-F 4:30 to 5:15
Age 7-12 Karate M-F 5:15 to 6:15
Age 13-Adult Karate M-W-F 6:15 to 7:45

Kobudo Tuesday and Thursday for teens and adults from 6:15 to 8:00

Aikido Saturday 10:00 to 12:00

Tuition will remain at $25 per student per month per day attended. So if you attend two classes a week, then your tuition will be $50; if you attend three or more sessions, then it will be $75. Those attending karate, kobudo, and aikido could have up to 6 sessions weekly, capped at $75 per month. We serve the greater Lonsdale area including Webster, Vesseli, Montgomery, Kilkenny, Shieldsville, New Prague, Faribault, Elko, New Market, Faribault, Lakeville, and Burnsville. All are welcome to try a class for free with no obligation. We believe our quality will keep students coming back, so we do not use contracts to lock students in.

$25 - $75 a month per student based on planned attendance. Those interested in Yoga should reach out to Jessica Emerson at [email protected]. She runs her program independently and can provide class times and prices.

"How do I get signed up?" is a common question. This is probably because other programs, such as those you find through Community Education or Youth Sports, have more going on and need more overhead to keep things running smoothly. Our dojo is more straightforward. We have tiered pricing based on how many classes a student attends, with monthly costs of $ 25, $ 50, or $ 75. We have a paper sign-up form that is filled out on-site that includes our insurance-mandated waiver, and that is it. Just show up a bit early, fill out the form, and try a class. If you like it, pay the next time you attend class. We will prorate partial months.

We had a good turnout last night in the 7 to adult group. I wanted to try something different and capture a clip of everyone saying hello as I panned past their faces. I thought everyone did great; they were spontaneous and funny and genuine. Unfortunately, I messed up the clip and only got the last 4 seconds. 🤯 I will try it again next time.

Photo taken by Don Shapland Sensei shortly after Paul Vermiglio Sensei arrived in Okinawa from Liverpool, UK. We visited some historical sights, including the Chinese Gardens and here at Ryukyu Mura. Paul in his humility only brought a white belt despite having been a yudansha in Jujitsu for several years, so Don had him wear one of his belts. Despite both of us having had previous martial arts experience, we were new to the Taira - Akamine lineage of kobudo, and thus the positions we picked for the pose at the time might not have been the ones we would pick today. It was a good memory from early 1996 I believe.

Congratulations to Pat for his advancement to 2nd Kyu.

https://www.facebook.com/reel/2299742144090758 More fun with Japanese. If you train with us, expect to be exposed to a lot of Japanese terms. At the least, you will learn to count in Japanese, learn the names of the stances, learn some words for body parts, and techniques. Our chief instructor lived in Japan for 18 years and took a couple of years of university-level Japanese Language Classes and then benefited from private tutoring.

We had some new faces in the 4-6 year old group last night as well as some “old hands”.

It is always great to share fellowship with other martial artists. This weekend Tim, An Chi, and Gary from the Shimbukan Dojo in Lonsdale are in Montana for a seminar with Tamayose Sensei and his Tesshinkan Kobudo students in the USA. Tamayose Sensei has been a friend and an inspiration since the 1990s.
