National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day
National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day is celebrated annually on Nov. 15. It was created to encourage people to clean out their fridges before the holidays.
Harmful bacteria can survive in the home fridge.
Here are some tips for cleaning out your fridge:
• Empty the fridge. Take everything out of the fridge, including drawers and racks.
• Check expiration dates: Throw away anything that's expired or past its Best By date.
• Check for recalls. Recall notices can be found in the news, at your local grocery store, or online at FoodSafety.gov. If you determine that a recalled product is in your home, do not eat the product. Dispose of the product and wash your hands with soap and water after handling it.
• Clean the fridge. Wipe down drawers, shelves, racks, walls and corners with hot water and soap.
• Sanitize the fridge. Sanitize surfaces as an extra precaution to kill germs. Use a solution of 1 tablespoon of unscented liquid chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of water. Apply to surfaces and allow to stand for several minutes. Air dry or pat dry with fresh paper towels.
