Megan Berner and Grace Johnson of Colorado Horse Rescue had the privilege of attending the American Horse Publications Equine Media Conference in Lexington, Kentucky. 🐴🤩

The conference brought together journalists, photographers, marketers, nonprofit leaders, and professionals from across the equine industry, creating a dynamic environment for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. It was a powerful reminder of the passion that drives the horse world and the role thoughtful storytelling plays in informing, inspiring, and connecting the equine community.

CHR was honored to receive 2nd place in the nonprofit video category for Forging a Future Where Hope Lives, the short film created for last year’s gala. While the award recognizes the storytelling and craftsmanship behind the film, the real honor is celebrating the community that powers our mission: volunteers, adopters, donors, and supporters whose commitment creates brighter futures for horses. 💙

Congratulations to The Foundation for the Horse on its well deserved first place award for the video created for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) conference, and for the important work the organization continues to do on behalf of horses everywhere. 👏

The experience sparked new ideas, meaningful connections, and a renewed appreciation for the people and organizations shaping the future of the equine industry. Thank you to American Horse Publications for creating a space that celebrates collaboration and the people dedicated to advancing equine media.

🎶 “I’m gonna love you forever and ever…” 🎶

And we think Elroy deserves a home that will do exactly that. 🩵

After spending years as a guest ranch horse at C Lazy U Ranch , Elroy is now enjoying a well deserved retirement at Colorado Horse Rescue. We are so grateful to C Lazy U Ranch for partnering with us through The Annie Project and helping provide horses like Elroy with a safe path into their next chapter.

These days, Elroy spends his time soaking up sunny naps, enjoying turnout with his gelding herd, and frolicking with his horse friends on brisk mornings. His kind and easygoing personality make him a wonderful companion horse for another horse looking for a buddy.

Could you be the perfect match for Elroy? Fill out a Horse Match Profile today at chr.org! 💙

As our final featured horse for ASPCA Adopt a Horse Month, we want to give a huge thank you to the ASPCA for creating this campaign and helping shine a light on adoptable horses like Elroy who are ready for loving homes of their own.🐴

For the Love of Seniors
A Peaceful Final Chapter 💙

Caring for senior horses is about so much more than extra feedings and special care plans. It’s about giving them comfort, dignity, companionship, and the chance to truly feel safe again.

In this heartfelt new blog, Dana Willett, CHR’s previous Volunteer Manager, shares how fostering one elderly mare named Harmony completely changed the course of her life. What began as a temporary foster experience soon became a calling to care for senior rescue horses through their golden years and final chapters.

Through Harmony and the many horses (and one donkey 🫏) who followed, Dana learned firsthand about the unique needs of aging equines, from managing PPID (Cushing’s Disease) and dental challenges to recognizing quality of life and making compassionate end-of-life decisions. But above all, she discovered how deeply these horses can flourish when given patience, individualized care, and love.

If you’ve ever considered fostering, cared for a senior horse of your own, or simply want to better understand the needs of aging horses, we hope you’ll take a moment to read this special story by visiting the link: CHR.org/senior-horses 🫶🏻

MEET SWEET LUNA! 🤍

Luna is growing up right before our eyes, and this smart, spirited filly is already showing so much promise.

From groundwork and grooming to tying, obstacles, and moving off of pressure, Luna continues to impress us with her curiosity and willingness to learn. She’s confident, independent, and incredibly quick to pick things up, all qualities that will make her an exciting partner for the right person.

Like any young horse, Luna is still learning boundaries and emotional regulation, but she approaches each new challenge with bravery and a level head. Watching her grow has been so rewarding, and we truly believe the sky is the limit for this special mare.

Because of her age and potential, Luna is available only to an Advanced or Trainer-level adopter with experience starting young horses.

If you’re looking for a talented young horse to help shape and grow with, Luna may be perfect for you! 🤩 Please fill out a Horse Match Profile on chr.org.

During this ASPCA Adopt a Horse Month, we will be highlighting more available horses at CHR that are looking for their forever home. Keep an eye out for your perfect match!

New on the blog: Preparing for Colorado’s Fire Season 🔥

Despite having a rainy week in parts of Colorado, wildfire risk is still very real across the state. Wet weather can offer a false sense of security, and conditions can shift quickly.

For horse owners, now is the time to prepare.

🐴 Keep halters and lead ropes accessible at all times
📁 Store Coggins, vaccines, and medical records in a waterproof go-bag
📸 Take updated identification photos of your horses
🚛 Practice loading and unloading before an emergency
🗺️ Identify and plan multiple evacuation routes

Our preparedness blog also shares how HorseAlert is helping connect horse owners with volunteer trailer drivers during real-time evacuations across Colorado.

Stay prepared, stay alert, and don’t wait for conditions to change. Read the full blog at the: chr.org/fire_season_horse_safety🔗

Some horses stay with you long after they’ve left your care. 🤍

River was one of those horses. From the moment he arrived at Colorado Horse Rescue, staff and volunteers were drawn to his calming presence, kind eye, and goofy personality.

River came to CHR from a loving family who made the difficult decision to find him a new home when they could no longer care for him. They trusted us to help find the perfect next chapter for a horse who meant so much to them, and we were honored to help carry that responsibility forward.

Then Patricia and her husband came along, and it was clear River had found his people. Since being adopted last October, River has been thriving in his new home, trading arena life for mountain trails with ease.

Patricia shared, ”River transitioned from stable-and-arena horse to mountain trail horse with characteristic equanimity. He is a calm, trustworthy mount for all, the tall and the small, and charms us every day with his sweet, goofy personality.”

Stories like River’s are only possible because of this community. Thank you to our donors, volunteers, and supporters for helping horses find the safe, loving futures they deserve. ✨

Some horses don’t need words to tell you they feel safe. You can see it in the way they choose to stay close. 🤍

Meet Happy, a 20-year-old one-eyed Thoroughbred who is now retired from riding and stepping into his next chapter. After a lifetime of work, he is ready for something quieter: a safe pasture, a steady routine, a trusted companion, and a forever home where he can just be a horse.

During liberty work with his trainer Marie, he remains attentive and engaged, following her movement through the arena with focus and willingness. He is goofy, sensitive, and deeply social, forming strong bonds with both people and his herd mates.

Having one eye means he can be a little more cautious with space and movement. He just needs someone patient, consistent, and kind enough to meet him where he is.

Do you think you could be that person for him? If so, visit chr.org and fill out a Horse Match Profile today! 💙

Soft soul. Fiery spirit. Meet Stevie 🔥✨

There is something unmistakable about a chestnut Arabian, a blend of courage, elegance, and expressive energy that feels both powerful and deeply sensitive. Stevie embodies all of it.

At 18 years old she is smart, willing, and highly tuned in to her rider. Stevie is looking for a calm confident partner with soft hands and patience as she is sensitive to pressure and thrives when given time to trust and understand her person.

She can be ridden Western or English and has the potential to become a truly rewarding all around partner especially for someone who appreciates a thoughtful, responsive horse and is ready to be patient and consistent with her.

If you think Stevie would be a great addition to your herd, please visit chr.org and fill out a Horse Match Profile.

Throughout this ASPCA Adopt a Horse Month, we will be highlighting multiple horses at CHR that are looking for their forever home. Keep an eye out for your perfect match! 💙

Thinking about adopting a pony? 🐴

They may be small, but there’s a lot more to them than meets the eye!

Here are 5 things to know before bringing one home:

1. It’s not just about height 💙
While the height difference between ponies and horses (14.2 hands vs 14.3 hands) may seem small, ponies often have different proportions, movement, and care needs compared to horses.

2. Size and rider fit matter 🌟
Choosing a pony isn’t just about how tall they are, it’s about how well they fit the rider. A general guide is the 20% rule: the rider and tack should weigh no more than 20% of the horse or pony’s body weight.

3. Ponies are not always a good fit for kids 👧
The best ponies for beginners are patient, consistent, and well-trained… not just small and cute.

4. Ponies are athletes too 🐎
Many ponies compete successfully at the same level as their taller friends in disciplines like jumping, dressage, and eventing.

5. They’re a long-term commitment 🤍
Many ponies live into their 30s, so adoption means planning for the long haul.

Whether you’re looking for a first mount, a trusted companion, or a competitive partner, a pony with the right training and temperament can be an incredible fit.
