Building a Stronger Future 🐴

Across Colorado, horse owners are facing increasing challenges and limited options for rehoming, emergency assistance, and end-of-life care.

To meet these growing needs, Colorado Horse Rescue has adopted a new strategic plan focused on expanding horse rescue, owner support programs, education, and innovative equine welfare solutions.

CHR’s Top Priorities:

💙 Rescue & Response — expanding our ability to rescue, rehabilitate, rehome, and support owners before a crisis happens.

💙 Innovation & Growth — growing programs like Leg Up, HorseAlert, The Annie Project, and Compassionate Endings to create more pathways to safety.

💙 Education & Leadership — sharing knowledge, strengthening partnerships, and helping raise the standard of care for horses across Colorado and beyond.

Finding the right horse takes time.🐴🩵

Bringing home a new horse is exciting, but finding the right match takes patience and careful consideration. Every horse has their own personality, training, and needs, and every adopter has different experience, goals, and circumstances.

At Colorado Horse Rescue, our adoption process is designed to help find the best fit for both horse and adopter. From completing a Horse Match Profile and talking with our Placement Team to meeting horses alongside our trainers, we take the time to make sure the partnership is right.

Sometimes the right horse is available right away. Sometimes it takes a little longer. We would rather wait for the right match than rush into the wrong one.

A horse doesn’t have to carry a rider to have a whole lot to offer.🐎🩵

Non-riding horses can:

🐴 Be a companion to another horse (no horse should live alone)
🐴 Teach young horses how to socialize
🐴 Learn groundwork, liberty & tricks (driving, obstacle courses, etc.)
🐴 Teach people about horse behavior
🐴 Help new horse owners learn horsemanship
🐴 Help create a balanced herd
🐴 Play with and enrich another horse’s life
🐴 Give a person a sense of purpose
🐴 Teach a person patience, connection & emotional regulation
🐴 Go on walks
🐴 Enjoy grooming, baths & attention
🐴 Build trust and confidence with people

And maybe most importantly…They can simply be loved.

Some horses retire after years under saddle. Others never have the opportunity to be ridden because of medical conditions or other limitations. Their lives may look different, but their value hasn’t changed.

Every horse deserves a life where they feel safe and valued. 🐴🤍

Where your horse lives affects their health, happiness, safety, and overall well-being, not to mention your own peace of mind. 💙

Before signing a boarding contract, ask yourself:

✔️ What type of boarding is best for my horse? (Full care, partial care, self-care, or pasture boarding?)
✔️ What does the monthly boarding fee actually include?
✔️ Are the horses healthy, relaxed, and well cared for?
✔️ Is there clean water, quality hay, safe fencing, and good footing?

Every artist needs a muse... and Picasso is hoping to find his. 💙

Picasso is a 19-year-old handsome retired lesson horse looking for his forever home as a companion horse and beloved pasture pal. After years of making people smile, he’s ready to enjoy the good life with someone who will spoil him with scratches, grooming sessions, and leisurely walks.

This gentle gelding is easy to catch, kind to handle, and loves meeting new people. He gets along well with other horses, has wonderful ground manners, stands politely for grooming, bathing, and hoof care, and enjoys hand walks, liberty, groundwork, and other enrichment. If there’s grass involved, he’s definitely interested! 😋✨

Due to age-related arthritis, Picasso has retired from riding, but he still has so much love to give. He’s looking for a home where he can simply be someone’s best friend and enjoy life one peaceful day at a time.
