A child who notices space begins to orient themselves in the world. A child who names space begins to think about relationship. A child who feels movement, direction, distance, sequence and change is already standing at the doorway of mathematical thought.

This awareness does not need to be taught in a dry or intellectual way. It can live in simple moments: the snail moving slowly across the path; the dog running fast in circles; the sun rising every morning in the same part of the sky; the child saying, “I am here.” It can live in watching water fill a bucket quickly when the tap is opened wide, or slowly when only a trickle comes through. It can live in seeing a cake rise in the heat of the oven, waiting for a kettle to boil, or discovering how long one can run before the body begins to tire.

Observing, noticing and naming these experiences are not separate from mathematics. They are the beginning of mathematics.

Lavender Hill is seeking a warm, grounded, and enthusiastic Assistant Teacher to join our intimate, relationship-based early childhood program in Longmont.

Rooted in Waldorf-inspired principles and deep connection with nature, Lavender Hill offers children a gentle, nurturing environment where imagination, creativity, seasonal rhythms, and outdoor exploration are at the heart of daily life. We value meaningful relationships, emotional presence, and creating a sense of home and wonder for young children.

This position is ideal for someone who:

Loves working with young children in a calm and respectful way

Feels at home outdoors in all seasons

Values play-based, nature-centered education

Appreciates Waldorf-inspired rhythms, storytelling, handwork, music, and creativity

Is dependable, collaborative, and emotionally attuned

Enjoys being part of a small, connected community

Responsibilities include:

Supporting the lead teacher in daily classroom rhythms and transitions

Assisting with outdoor activities, nature walks, gardening, and seasonal projects

Helping maintain a beautiful, warm, and orderly environment

Supporting children with care, presence, and gentle guidance

Collaborating closely with a small teaching team and families

Qualifications preferred:

Experience working with young children

Background or interest in Waldorf, Reggio, forest school, or nature-based education

CPR/First Aid certified (or willing to obtain)

Strong communication and reliability

Tiny hands, big discoveries 🐞🔍🌿

Our young explorers have been diving into the fascinating world of bugs — carefully observing, asking questions, and learning through direct experiences in nature. From watching ants work together to discovering ladybugs hidden beneath leaves, each moment becomes an opportunity for wonder, science, and connection.

Early childhood is the perfect time to nurture curiosity. Through outdoor exploration, children build observation skills, develop respect for living things, strengthen language and critical thinking, and experience the joy of learning with their whole bodies and senses.

Science begins with wonder — and nature is such a beautiful teacher.

Yesterday’s storm became today’s playground. 🌿❄️

The children gathered fallen branches, carried logs together, and transformed a patch of lingering snow into a woodland shelter and imaginative play space. What began as storm debris became a fort, a gathering place, and a world entirely of their own creation.

This is the magic of open-ended, nature-based play — cooperation, creativity, resilience, and wonder woven together outdoors.

At Lavender Hill, nature is always part of the curriculum. 💚
