I've been a bit quiet the last few months, but I wanted to check in with y'all and give you some updates so you aren't left wondering or tempted to listen to misinformation.
Towards the end of last year (2024), I started experiencing some significant physical pain, and the source of that pain was difficult to diagnose. Working with my doctors to get it figured out involved a lot of tests, imaging, etc and in the process they found cancer in two different areas. Ironically, neither of these were the source of the pain I have been experiencing.
I was diagnosed with colon and prostate cancers and since then, I've been working with my doctors to identify and execute the best possible treatment plan. While still terrifying, both were early stage and very treatable.
About a week ago, I got some great news; after treatment, no trace of the colon cancer remains. I will be on an accelerated screening schedule for at least another year to be sure it doesn't return, but my doctors are confident that I'm in the clear in that regard.
I'm still working through the treatment plan for the prostate cancer. Some options are more promising that others, and there is certainly potential for some difficult and unpleasant side effects from treatment. My long term prognosis however, is excellent.
Between the physical impact of the cancer and the acute pain that started this whole thing, as well as the mental and emotional impact of dealing with all of this, I know I haven't consistently shown up the way I want to recently. I've been quieter, more solitary, and sometimes a bit flakey as I have skipped events, activities, etc, due to pain levels and such, without providing much in the way of an explanation. If any of that has had a negative impact on you or on our relationship, I'm sorry and I am working on doing better.
For those of you who I had leaned on during this time, thank you so much. When you checked on me, let me vent and process, or when you were patient with me when I wasn't feeling my best, you made and continue to make all the difference. Thank you. I love you.
There is still a bit of rough road ahead, but I have every reason to expect to be back 100% soon. In the meantime, I will still be getting out to events and seeing y'all as much as I can. If you do see me out and I seem a little off, please know it's not you, I'm likely just having a high pain day and working through this stuff. Thank you for your patience and grace.
Love y'all and see you soon!

Anyone else who's looking for alternatives now that Southwest Airlines is being ruined by a greedy investment group, I've moved to United, as I can keep all my loyalty points, etc there, and unlike Southwest, they also fly internationally, etc and are priced very competitively. Add their United Club card to that and you get free luggage as well.
The United Club Infinite gives you and a companion 2 free checked bags, plus lounge access, they pay for you to get precheck or global entry, and a bunch of other perks that easily pays for the annual fee.
If you'd rather not be tied to one airline, I really like the Chase Sapphire Card. Lots of similar travel perks, but you can transfer points to tons of airlines, hotels, and other cool stuff.
If you're going to apply, please consider using these links, as it will also give me some bonus miles, which will make event travel to present a bit easier for us.

What events are you excited about in 2025?
What are your "can't-miss" cons for the coming year?

I've seen a few posts about this and was going to just stay quiet, but having failed at that I will at least try to be brief with my thoughts.
I think some of the author's frustration stems from how he and Race are defining the term "old guard". I'm going to change language here to try to make my point, separate from some of the emotion tied to language about Leather and the Old Guard so bear with me - I'm not saying it's a perfect comparison, but I think it works well enough to illustrate my point.
I see it kind of like someone who today, says they live a "50's Household Lifestyle". One would not need to have lived through the 50's to do this, and would certainly be able to gather information about what the "stereotypical 50's household" would have been like; one partner as a homemaker, greeting the breadwinner at the door after work with a martini, etc. I could absolutely see that person being offended if someone were to say there was no such thing as a 50's Household Lifestyle. It would be invalidating, as he is living it, and he exists, therefor, the idea does in fact exist.
The difference is that people who lived through the 50's, in various areas of the country, at different levels of affluence, from different racial, social, and other backgrounds, would likely tell you that while there may have been those rare, individual households or even small groups of families that functioned that way, they themselves never experienced the romanticized version of the "50's Household" that was made popular on television shows and movies depicting those times.
When those people say it didn't exist, they aren't telling you that you can't live that lifestyle, they are saying that the idealized depiction that so many folks imagine was not based in reality, but rather on a backlot somewhere in Hollywood.
They aren't trying to cancel you, rather they are speaking truth to those who, although they never lived through it themselves, claim that this was how all/most American families lived during the 50's and therefor it is an authentic lifestyle based on fact and tradition. When someone makes these claims, what they are actually doing is trying to erase the real, authentic, lived experience of the people who were actually there, and replace it with a fictional, romanticized version of reality.
These folks pointing out the truth aren't telling you that you can't live your "50's Lifestyle". Live however makes you happy. They would rather you just stop spreading the myth that it was a true and authentic standard, and in the process, invalidating and erasing their own real, lived history.
