A parent recently called to ask about our programs. As we were talking, I explained that our students spend as much time outside as possible.
She asked, "Do you just pause learning when you go outside?"
I have to admit... I was caught completely off guard.
My first instinct was to defend our program because I know firsthand the incredible learning that happens every day. But then I realized something important: this wasn't criticism, it was an opportunity to explain what outdoor education really is.
At Long Grove Country School, learning doesn't stop when we walk outside. It expands.
Our teachers are constantly finding teachable moments in nature, on the playground, in the garden, with our animals, and through hands-on projects. The classroom simply doesn't end at the door.
This summer provided the perfect example.
Each camp group was challenged to design and build a miniature golf hole inspired by a favorite book. The only rule? Their hole had to tell the story of the book.
The campers selected:
- Pete the Cat
- The Rainbow Fish
- If You Take a Mouse to School
- The Three Little Pigs
- I Survived
- The Wild Robot
- Harry Potter
- Percy Jackson
The children planned their designs, worked together, solved problems, measured materials, built obstacles, painted scenery, and explained how each feature connected back to the story.
They weren't just creating a miniature golf course—they were demonstrating reading comprehension, creativity, engineering, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

Education can happen anywhere.
It is not limited to a desk, a chair, or four walls.
