LBMS 8th grade boys had an amazing two days today and yesterday engaging in small group circles with Sergeant Rick Yarosh from Sweethearts and Heroes. Circles with Sgt. Yarosh provide students with a safe, supportive space to discuss real-life challenges, explore strategies for handling peer conflict, and strengthen their leadership and communication skills. Our 8th grade circle groups will have another opportunity to engage in circles with Sgt. Yarosh in March to build off of the fall session.

Special thanks to Sweethearts and Heroes for sharing the power of community and connection with our students!

Science Research students visited the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center today and conducted Bay Studies, which entailed testing water samples to see how the Nor’easter may have altered the readings as well as see what organisms they could “scoop up” with a net. The second part of the visit, called Seaside Engineers, involved a hike to the jetties and exploration of beach vegetation to study them as barriers to erosion. Students were then challenged to build a structure that could withstand high winds and waves. Special thanks to Science Research teacher, Ms. Bryan, and to the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center for this incredible hands-on experience for our students to view the impact of the storm on our local beaches.

8th grade students this week learned about the culminating Middle Years Programme Community Service Project that all 8th graders complete as part of our International Baccalaureate experience at Long Beach Middle School. Project Coordinators, Ms. Kalner and Ms. McWilliams, and Middle Year Programme Coordinator, Ms. Behan, shared the timeline and steps for the project as well as project examples from last year, some of which included coordinating a Bingo Night at Lido Townhouse, recycling sneakers through an organization called Gotsneakers, and coordinating a toy drive for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center patients, to name a few. We can’t wait to see what wonderful contributions this year’s 8th graders make to the community! 🌎

LBMS sixth grade students were surprised this week with the debut of our brand new hydroponic towers in their STEM classrooms! Students will be growing vegetables, plants, and herbs in both these classroom towers and in our greenhouses this year thanks to these special new additions! 🪴 🌱 Special thanks to Director of Science PK-12, Ms. Tursi, and our district administration for the support with these new towers! A big thank you also to East School STEM teacher, Matt Jones, and LBMS Technology teacher, Brian Pross, for assembling these new towers for our STEM classrooms and giving our STEM teachers an information session to get started!

On Thursday, September 17th, Long Beach Middle School welcomed families for Back to School Night! LBMS PTA hosted a welcome table, Middle School Faculty and Staff presented course and grade level presentations to families, and NJHS students greeted and guided our families throughout the building. New Student Orientation at LBMS today was a blast! Our incoming 6th graders had the opportunity to meet their teachers and teammates, tour the building, engage in team-building, and practice opening their locks! Special thanks to all of our LBMS staff and our NJHS student tour guides who made the day such a wonderful success!
