Green Spaces and Community Gardens

Green Spaces and Community Gardens We are dedicated to preserving and creating more green spaces in Long Beach post-Sandy.

We look to set up a land trust and transform lots into community gardens and other open spaces for public use.

"To ensure this protection lasts into the future, the California Department of Water Resources recently paid for a conservation easement on the ranch. The easement prevents development on the land, ensuring it will remain in farming, which stands up to flooding better than homes.

To put that more bluntly, the deal helps ensure levees on the farm will not be raised beyond their current height. This means that in severe storms, the farm is likely to flood first, serving as a kind of hydraulic relief valve for Sacramento and its nearly half-million residents."

Gee...you mean that green spaces, ie. LESS development, actually mitigate potential floods in urban areas???

It’s not every day that we protect farmland that could potentially save a half-million people.

This land will remain prime farmland and an important wildlife habitat—forever. And it could act as a bulwark to protect California’s capital and its residents from : http://ow.ly/mOs3L .

"Long Beach Grows is contributing to the City of Long Beach’s sustainability goal of establishing community gardens in every park 5 acres or larger by 2020, converting 100% of city owned vacant lots to interim or better yet permanent green uses, and creating new permanent green spaces, including community gardens and urban farms."
