The California State University, Long Beach Forensics Team competes in speech and debate competitions at the local, state, and national levels.
Beach Forensics is a nationally competitive and nationally ranked speech and debate team. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 in Liberal Arts 1 (LA 1-309) for administration and team business and practice in the Faculty Offices (FO4-153-159). The Beach speech team has spent the last few days at the National Forensics Association tournament hosted by TSU in Nashville. As outrounds start today, please extend a congratulations and good luck to Alex Christenson headed into octos in ADS and Poetry, and Alex and Rebecca Lavond headed to octos in Duo! Rebecca is headed into octos of communication analysis / rhetorical criticism!!!
We would also like to congratulate Alex on their acceptance to the graduate program in Comm Studies at CSULB.
Congratulations to all the others who do not advance but had a wonderful fight in the prelims Shay and Kris!

Curtis Ortega marks the second time that California State University, Long Beach has received the Baby Jo award. His former debate partner Jay-z Flores (Diego) received it in 2024. A awesome achievement for the both of them.
THE ANNUAL AWARD NAMED IN HONOR OF 1994 CEDA NATIONAL CHAMPION BRIAN JOHNSTON IS DESIGNED TO RECOGNIZE AN OUTSTANDING DEBATER IN CEDA. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES COMPETITIVE SUCCESS AND A COMMITMENT TO REPRESENT THE HIGHEST VALUES OF THE DEBATE COMMUNITY.

Congratulations to the Semi-finalists of the 2026 CEDA! Iowa AP advanced on a 3-2 decision. Great run for Beach Forensics!! Curtis Ortega was the 3rd speaker and the Baby Jo Debater of the year. Daniel Son was the 5th place speaker. Mallory Johnson and Ale Escobar were the double octa finalists!! Jaysyn Green 💚 was the Graduate Student coach of the year!!
Alessandra and Curtis were awarded the CEDA All-American Award—recognizing debaters who demonstrate competitive excellence, academic success, strong character, and meaningful contributions to their squad.
This is the organization and tournament that Jack Howe founded. He was the first director of forensics at CSULB. He obviously left his mark on this community because so many folks spoke of him this week.
As this CEDA has ended, Deven Cooper, Now ascends to be the CEDA president following in the footsteps of Jack Howe!

In a very close 3-2 CSULB OM receives 2nd place ! This is a historical run at the NDT for Beach forensics. Congratulations to Emory 🎊Curtis was the 2nd place speaker and Daniel was 18th. They were the 2nd seed at the National Debate Tournament (NDT) and 5th place Copland team in the country. Amazing showing !!! GO BEACHHHHHHHH off to CEDA !
