Our Shore Corps team joined to conduct a fish survey at the Golden Shore Ecological Preserve in Long Beach. Corpsmembers helped retrieve a seine net, learned to identify fish, and helped count the representative species in the Preserve. Conducting a fish survey prior to any work in an area is critical to getting a baseline understanding of the aquatic ecosystem to determine the potential impact of any disturbance in an area. Working with partners like Tidal Influence helps connect our corpsmembers with field experts and gain valuable field research skills.

Recently, corpsmembers had the opportunity to learn all about urban water resilience and were introduced to the structure and function of water systems in Los Angeles, including how water is sourced, transported, and distributed across the region. This training highlighted the complexity of local infrastructure and the importance of conservation in a drought-prone environment. Corpsmembers engaged in discussions around the role of water systems in supporting communities and environmental sustainability to strengthen their understanding of our region and the role water plays in our everyday lives.
