The Long Beach Veterans Commission has been working hard to have Long Beach veterans’ voices heard in the City of Long Beach and after many revisions and a few setbacks, we were finally able to present a Veterans Strategic Plan to the Long Beach City Council on March 15, 2022. You can download a copy of the Strategic Plan by using this link: Link to Strategic Plan
This plan highlights many top-level ideas we discussed, but the end goal can be found in PDF page 8: To establish a structurally funded Office of Veterans Support, located in the Department of Health and Human Services, to serve as the infrastructure to carry out the goals, objectives and strategies presented in this plan. Ideally this would be a city operated clearing house where veterans could come and get directly connected to help with a variety of items from housing, to jobs, to education, etc. There are a lot of good resources out there and sometimes without someone who knows where to go and what forms to fill out, making that connection can be a problem. This office would fill that gap between the need and the actual resources so veterans can get the benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice.
Call to Action:
Now, we know you’re as busy as can be right now as the semester winds down, but we wanted to let you know that our job is not done yet. In the month of May and June, Long Beach City Council will be discussing what programs will be funded for Fiscal Year 2022 and now is the time to have all our voices heard.
We ask that you take a few minutes of your time to introduce yourselves to each Councilmember -- including their Chief of Staff which will be the person that will most likely respond -- and tell them that you’ve heard about the city possibly funding a Veterans Support Office in the City of Long Beach. Let them know what district you live in Long Beach if you do, and tell them how having a VSO in Long Beach could help veterans from all walks of life, including yourself. Adding a personal touch might show them how much this would mean to us. Who knows, maybe if a lot of us reach out, they may see supporting veterans as a way to win a re-election.
Below are the emails for each district Councilmember and their Chief of Staff:
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Eboney Pearson ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Connor Lock ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Jack Cunningham ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Councilman Supernaw handles the responses personally as I understand it)
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Holly Unruh ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Chork Nim ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Celia Luna ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Lynette Johnson ([email protected]))
[email protected] (Chief of Staff Matthew Hamlett ([email protected]))
If you do have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me at [email protected] or to Gina Overholt, Commission Coordinator at [email protected].
Thank you for your time and I hope you all have a very successful semester.
Best wishes,
Jesse Blanco
